Additional info/contents	The Wooden Soldier is a short, simple work commissioned by the Singapore Ministry of Education. It was initially intended as a compulsory piece for the Singapore Youth Festival 2012. Since many school wind orchestras in Singapore are incompletely staffed, the composer was specifically asked to create the work so that it could be played with a limited ensemble: this explains some doubling and optional instruments.

Programme notes *: The wooden toy soldier that served as the source of inspiration first marches in a fictitious parade, then shakes a leg to a jaunty waltz. Both sections are based on the same melodic material: the fast three-four time is thus basically a variation on the parade theme. The alternation between major and minor keys as well as interspersed surprising turns ensure that this piece with its one theme always remains exciting despite the numerous restrictions imposed.
