Additional info/contents "Bellum Belgicum" (Latin translation for 'The Dutch Revolt', 1566-1588) is the name in modern historiography for the so-called 'Eighty Years' War' in the Netherlands. The name 'The Dutch Revolt' mainly refers to the early years of the 'Eighty Years War'. The novel 'Hotse Hiddes' by Sibe of Aangium is set in this period. This story was the source of inspiration for the composer Rieks van der Velde for this composition.

'Hotse Hiddes'
Friesland, 1567: Hotse Hiddes, a rebellious peasant boy from Anjum, loves Wietske, a young woman who works as a maid on the manorial farm Der Prinsenhof. Although the farmer and his wife are strict Roman Catholics, Wietske decides to become a follower of the so-called "heresy doctrine". One of the servants finds a Bible in her room and betrays her to the chaplain. Wietske is imprisoned and faces a sad fate, although Hotse does everything to free her. Hotse is filled with a desire for revenge. He is the leader of a band of rebels who fight the enemy - Spaniards, monks and priests - with fire and sword. The fact that he also causes innocent victims in the process does not bother the indifferent Hotse. He is notorious in Friesland and the surrounding area. After he is seriously injured in battle, Hotse is nursed in the house of an old miller and his wife. Here he learns the terrible consequences of his gang's cruel raids and plundering. It is a very different Hotse who leaves the miller's house to enlist in the army of William of Orange.

This composition was written under the command of the Dutch 'National Youth Fanfare Orchestra', on the occasion of the 50th anniversary (1959-2009) of this orchestra. In this composition, the 'Piebe Bakker motif' is used. The motif is a musical translation of the words 'Piebe, Piebe, Bakker' and comes from the work 'In Memoriam Piebe Bakker ' by Rob Goorhuis. The composers who wrote a composition for the 'National Youth Fanfare Orchestra' in the jubilee year 2009 all used this motif as a link between the different jubilee compositions.
