Programme notes *: The prophet Isaiah, one of the most important figures in the Old Testament of the Bible, left behind a rich legacy of religious teaching, prophetic message and literary beauty. His ministry spanned a period of several decades during the 8th century BC in the Kingdom of Judah, particularly during the reign of King Hezekiah. Isaiah is traditionally regarded as the author of the biblical book of Isaiah, which is divided into three main sections and comprises 66 chapters. While there is debate among theologians as to the exact authorship and genesis of the book, Isaiah is nevertheless considered a central figure in its context of origin. His messages were complex and ranged from warnings against idolatrous practices and calls for social justice to messianic promises and comfort for God's people in times of need. Isaiah spoke to the rulers and elites of Jerusalem as well as to the common people, and his words had a powerful impact on the religious and political landscape of his day. Some of the most notable themes in Isaiah's messages are the visions of an ideal future where peace, justice and reconciliation prevail. He also prophesied the arrival of an "Immanuel", a divine saviour who would redeem the people of Israel. These messianic prophecies and hopes were later interpreted in Christianity as predictions of the birth of Jesus Christ. Isaiah's writings are not only theologically significant, but also of literary value. His book is known for its poetic beauty, vivid language and powerful imagery. His words have inspired and influenced artists, musicians and writers and have left a lasting impression on religious and cultural history. Although Isaiah lived in a time characterised by political instability, war and social unrest, he proclaimed a message of hope and comfort for the people of God. His legacy as a prophet and teacher of the faith lives on and his words remain a source of inspiration and encouragement for believers around the world to this day.
