Additional info/contents The Soldier's Wife is a short, simple work commissioned by the Singapore Ministry of Education. It was initially intended as a compulsory piece for the 2012 Singapore Youth Festival. As many school wind orchestras in Singapore are incompletely staffed, the composer was specifically asked to create the work so that it could be played with a limited ensemble: this explains some doubling and optional instruments.

A warm-sounding, melodic passage opens this short work: the wife of the - wooden - soldier sings a kind of lullaby. This lyrical section is followed by a more powerful part, but built on the same melodic material. The syncopated rhythm here and there gives this part a special energy, and harmonically there are also some surprising turns - although one must always bear in mind the limitations imposed by the degree of difficulty. If the work is still quiet and sweet at the beginning, by the end much more "feminine energy" is perceptible...!

Once upon a time in a small village, time seemed to stand still and the stories of the residents whispered through the rolling hills and ancient trees. In this dreamy place lived the wooden soldier's wife, a tender soul who sat at the window every evening and waited for her loved one.

Her husband, once a living soldier, was now trapped in a wooden body. A spell had turned him into this form, and yet his love for his wife seemed unquenchable. The wooden soldier's wife sang him a lullaby every evening, hoping that he could feel the melody in his wooden heart. The music began softly and gently as the wooden soldier's wife sang her lullaby. The melody, full of tenderness and longing, filled the night and roamed the lonely forests around the village.

But then, like a sudden gust of wind, the music took a more powerful turn. Syncopated rhythms and surprising harmonic turns reflected the strength and intensity of the love the woman felt for her wooden soldier. The melody became an expression of feminine energy that resonated through the gentle night air. In the village, people knew about the extraordinary love of the wooden soldier's wife. They heard the music coming through the trees and felt the energy spreading through the night. The village recognized the deep connection between the woman and the wooden soldier. The music became a symbol of steadfast love that endured even the toughest trials. The melody faded away, but the love of the wooden soldier's wife remained alive and strong like the moon that watched over the village.
