Additional info/contents	Johann Strauss II completed his operetta "The Gypsy Baron" after two years of work. Premiered in 1885, the work is based on a novella by Mór Jókai and remains one of his greatest successes. The story takes place in 1741 in Timișoara: Sándor Barinkay returns to his homeland, falls in love with the gypsy Saffi, and discovers that she is the daughter of a Turkish pasha. After returning from the war, he is ennobled and finds happiness with Saffi. Musically, Strauss blends Austrian waltz and polka melodies with passionate gypsy music. The overture presents wind orchestras with technical and stylistic challenges, as it requires rapid shifts between moods and styles. (© musicainfo.net)
