Additional info/contents (Symphonisch Gedicht - Revised version)

"Daer wierd gehouden een banket, het hoofd werd op tafel gezet" (there is a banquet, the head is placed on the table), this is a bizarre end of the song by Mr. Halewijn. The song tells the scary as well as fascinating story about the woman murderer, who is killed in the end himself.

The information, which has been passed on all over Europe for centuries, was transformed into a symphonic poem by Gerard Boedijn in almost eight minutes. Boedijn regarded this work, with a very programmatic character, as one of the highlights of his oeuvre. After a crescendo whirl on the snare drum, the figure of Halewijn immediately manifests itself.

The musician and listener lead through the epic via four core themes. All important figures or situations have their own theme. In addition to the hearty Halewijn### motif, there is of course the king's daughter motif in a contrasting theme. At a certain moment the princess, riding on the best horse in her most beautiful clothes, goes in search of Mr. Halewijn. In the forest they meet and ride on together. The riding motifs are very clear. As we now know, the end of this legend is a victory for the king's daughter, resulting in a festive coda of this musical work. A good seventy-two years after the publication of this composition, Molenaar offers a completely revised version commissioned by 'Kunstfactor' by Eric Swiggers. A composition that certainly deserves a place in your repertoire.

The legend of Mr. Halewijn

Mr. Halewijn is a legendary figure from Dutch folklore, also known in other European traditions, such as German and Scandinavian. The story of Mr. Halewijn is a dark ballad that describes the life of an evil nobleman or knight who lures women to their deaths.

The legend tells of a mysterious and seductive man named Mr. Halewijn who has a magical attraction for women. He sings an enchanting song that attracts women from near and far. These women, enchanted by his voice, follow him into his forest, where he eventually kills them. The stories vary in the details, but the basic structure remains similar: Mr. Halewijn is a brutal murderer of women who does not escape his just punishment in the end.

One of the best-known variants of the ballad tells of a king's daughter who sets out to meet Mr. Halewijn despite her father's warnings. However, she is smarter and braver than his previous victims. When she meets him, she manages to outwit and kill him, often with the help of his own sword. She returns home a heroine, thus freeing future victims from his evil influence.

Arrangement for wind orchestra "Halewijn" by Eric Swiggers

Eric Swiggers, a contemporary composer and arranger, has interpreted the old ballad of Mr. Halewijn in a new form and arranged it for wind orchestra. His composition, "Halewijn", takes the dark and dramatic elements of the original story and transforms them into a modern musical narrative.

Swiggers' "Halewijn" for wind orchestra uses a wide range of instruments to convey the emotional depth and dark atmosphere of the ballad. The music is characterized by the following features:
- Dramatic theme design: Swiggers uses recurring motifs to portray the seductive and threatening nature of Mr. Halewijn. These motifs alternate between mysterious, quiet passages and intense, loud sections, reflecting the danger and horror in the story.
- Instrumentation: The wind instruments are used to represent different characters and moods. High woodwinds could symbolize the innocent victims, while low brass embodies the threat of Mr. Halewijn.
- Dynamics and timbres: By using contrasts in volume and timbre, Swiggers creates a captivating narrative. The change from soft, lyrical passages to powerful, dissonant sounds enhances the dramatic twists of the story.
- Modern harmonies: Although the composition is deeply rooted in the traditional ballad, Swiggers uses modern harmonic techniques to emphasize the timeless nature of the story and make it accessible to a modern audience.

Eric Swiggers' arrangement of "Halewijn" shows how an ancient legend can be revived through modern musical interpretation. The grim story of the woman murderer Mr. Halewijn, which has been handed down in European folklore for centuries, finds a new form of expression in this composition that both honors the past and integrates contemporary musical elements. Through the powerful and emotional language of brass music, Swiggers succeeds in bringing the profound and terrifying tale of Mr. Halewijn to a new audience.
