Composer Hidas, Frigyes
Difficulty level 4
Evaluation level of countries D4 (German upper level)
Duration 6:13
Additional info/contents Frigyes Hidas was the most prolific Hungarian wind band composer, and his works are the most frequently performed. His hugely popular folk song suites are the best examples of Hidas’ mature style. Only a few composers are able to adequately deal with the adaptation of folk songs. Bartók himself said of the challenges that this genre presented to the 20th century composer: “Dealing with folk melodies is one of the most difficult tasks. I dare say it is as difficult, if not more difficult, than writing a major original work.” This much is certain: inspiration is just as important for arranging folk songs as it is for writing any other work. Performing it requires brilliant technique and the ability to shape the music freely.

Hungarian music and the "Folksong Suite No. 1" by Frigyes Hidas

Hungarian music is characterized by a rich and diverse tradition that draws on various cultural influences. The country's music ranges from traditional folk songs to classical and contemporary compositions and is heavily influenced by folk music, which is deeply rooted in Hungarian culture.

Hungarian folk music is known for its lively rhythms and melancholic melodies. It is often played with instruments such as the violin, the cymbal and the tárogató. Hungarian folk music is characterized by specific modes, irregular time signatures and improvisational elements. Dance music, especially the Csárdás, is an important part of this tradition and reflects the joy of life and community spirit.

Composers such as Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály have intensively researched Hungarian folk music and integrated it into their works. They collected folk songs and adapted them into their compositions, bringing the folk music tradition into classical music and making it internationally known.

Hungary's contemporary music scene features a mix of traditional and modern influences. Composers and musicians experiment with different styles and techniques to continue and renew the country's rich musical tradition.

"Folksong Suite No. 1" by Frigyes Hidas

Frigyes Hidas was an important Hungarian composer, best known for his works for wind orchestra. He wrote a variety of compositions, often based on traditional Hungarian melodies and reinterpreting them in a modern context.

The "Folksong Suite No. 1" for wind band is an outstanding example of Hidas' ability to capture the essence of Hungarian folk music and translate it into a work for wind band. This suite consists of several movements, each based on traditional Hungarian folk songs.

In the "Folksong Suite No. 1" Hidas uses various stylistic elements that are typical of Hungarian folk music. These include irregular time signatures, modal melodies and the use of instruments that imitate traditional Hungarian timbres. The suite is both technically demanding and emotionally engaging, offering the musicians the opportunity to showcase their virtuosity and expressiveness.

The "Folksong Suite No. 1" is a popular work in the repertoire of many wind orchestras and is often performed in concerts. It is an example of Hidas' ability to dress traditional melodies in a modern orchestral guise, making Hungary's rich musical tradition accessible to a wider audience. Musicians and listeners appreciate the suite for its lively and expressive music, which captures both the joy and melancholy of Hungarian folk music.

Hungarian music is rich and diverse, deeply rooted in the folk music tradition and at the same time open to modern influences. Frigyes Hidas' "Folksong Suite No. 1" for wind band is an excellent example of the fusion of these traditions. With his ability to interpret traditional melodies in a contemporary context, Hidas has created a work that captures the essence of Hungarian folk music and keeps it alive for new generations.
