The Battle of Vigo, which took place in 1702 during the War of the Spanish Succession, was a significant event in the maritime history of Europe. This battle took place near the Spanish port city of Vigo and was a decisive chapter in the conflicts for dominance in the Atlantic.

At the time, Spain was embroiled in the War of the Spanish Succession, a conflict over the succession to the throne following the death of the Spanish King Charles II. The Allies, consisting of Great Britain, the Netherlands and other European powers, fought against the Franco-Spanish troops who had taken control the Bourbons supported.

The Battle of Vigo began when an Allied fleet commanded by Admiral George Rooke and Dutch Admiral Philips van Almonde attempted to capture the port of Vigo. Their goal was to capture the Spanish silver fleet, which was seeking protection in Vigo. This silver fleet consisted of ships loaded with valuable treasures, including gold, silver and precious stones that came from the Spanish colonies in the Americas.

The Allies made a bold and daring attack and entered the port of Vigo, where they met the Spanish fleet. Although the Spanish tried to defend their ships, many of them were sunk or captured. The Allies captured a significant portion of the Silver Fleet's treasure, although not all ships could be captured, and fierce fighting ensued.

In the midst of this dramatic event, the ship "Santo Cristo de Maracaibo" played a remarkable role. It was part of the Spanish fleet and was one of the largest and most powerful ships in the battle. Under the command of Captain Juan de Mendoza y Luna, the "Santo Cristo de Maracaibo" bravely defended its territory against the Allied attacks.

Although the Battle of Vigo was not a clear victory for the Allies, they still managed to capture a significant portion of the Spanish silver treasure fleet. This had far-reaching effects on the course of the War of the Spanish Succession and strengthened the Allies' position in this conflict.

The naval battle of Vigo and the ship "Santo Cristo de Maracaibo" are remembered as important events in the history of sea travel and naval warfare in the 18th century. They show the determination and courage of the sailors of that time and the importance of strategic naval battles for the outcome of conflicts on an international level.
