Programme notes *: additional text

German climber Hermann Buhl's seventeen-hour solo ascent to the summit of Nanga Parbat is certainly one of the most exciting feats in mountaineering. Not only because it testifies to unbelievable physical performance, but above all because it describes the mental strength of an exceptional mountaineer. Especially the fact that Hermann Buhl believed in the feasibility and success of his summit ascent makes it clear that he was able to set himself goals that were beyond the imagination of even the most extreme alpinists of those days. Nanga Parbat was known as the "mountain of destiny" where good alpinists, such as Willy Merkl, had lost their lives on earlier expeditions. In addition, a style was pursued in those years which, with the greatest possible technical effort and many high camps of a summit team, was intended to keep the all-decisive last stage as short as possible. The fact that Hermann Buhl dared to undertake around eight kilometres and 1200 metres in altitude without oxygen in the death zone, reached the summit at 7 p.m., stood a bivouac at 8000 metres without protective equipment and came back down to his companions under his own steam remains one of the great moments of alpinism.
