Ohne Auftrag komponiert. Dichte Passagen wechseln mit durchsichtigen oder solistischen. Der dritte Satz ist ein Scherzo, in dem das 2. Violoncello teilweise die Funktion eines Schlaginstruments übernimmt. Das nur 18 Takte umfassende 'Intermezzo piccolo' wurde als Zäsur zwischen 3. und 5. Satz eingefügt. An Ende des Schlusssatzes wird nochmals Bezug genommen auf den Beginn des Werkes.
