Composer Pütz, Marco
Difficulty level 3
Evaluation level of countries D3 (German medium level)
Duration 7:45
Additional info/contents Enjoying his travels in Scotland, Marco Pütz decided to compose a piece for concert band, based on Scottish folk songs. While in the airport at Glasgow, shortly before boarding his plane, Pütz bought a collection of folk melodies from all over Scotland that had been arranged for flute. At first he harmonized several melodies in his own style, then he began to alter the resulting pieces (especially rhythmically). Eventually Pütz added passages here and there and orchestrated the piece for concert band. Pütz's resulting composition is an educational work that is both enjoyable and appealing to players of all ages, altough it was written with young bands in mind. The second movement, The Wedding, was commissioned by Frau Andrea Becker as a wedding present for Judith and Rainer Becker.

"From the Highlands" is a fascinating composition for wind orchestra created by the renowned composer Marco Pütz. This musical journey takes listeners into the breathtaking landscape of the Scottish Highlands and presents an impressive selection of traditional Scottish songs reinterpreted in a contemporary orchestral context.

The piece begins with "Skinny Malinky Langlegs", a traditional Scottish children's song characterized by its lively melody and cheerful atmosphere. Pütz gives this song a contemporary touch by combining it with powerful orchestral sounds and stirring rhythms that reflect the vitality and liveliness of Scottish culture.

The second part, "The Wedding (He pipede so sweet)", introduces listeners to a festive wedding celebration, accompanied by traditional bagpipe sounds. Pütz captures the joy and happiness of this special moment and gives it an additional dimension through cleverly placed orchestral arrangements and tonal textures.

The third part, "Cam'ye o'er frae France", tells the story of Scottish soldiers returning from France. This ballad is interpreted by Pütz with a mixture of melancholy and pride, with the dramatic elements of the music enhancing the emotional intensity of the song.

From the Highlands" is an impressive example of Marco Pütz's artistic vision and his ability to combine traditional folk music with contemporary orchestration. Through his lively and sensitive interpretations of Scottish songs, Pütz takes listeners on a musical journey through the majestic and inspiring landscape of the Highlands.
