Additional info/contents Choreography was commissioned by the 2008 ATSSB All-State Band by the Association of Texas Small School Bands. The infectious beat patterns and memorable melodic content combine to make this an excellent concert opener.

This piece of the same name written in overture form, the piece draws its inspiration from dance movements found in contemporary stage, ballet and theatrical productions. The piece opens with fast-paced angular gestures accompanied by rapid rhythmical punctuations before yielding to a contrasting lyrical section with long, flowing lines and many opportunities for expressive playing.

The term "Choreography" is a fascinating and versatile term in music, often used in connection with the structure and arrangement of musical elements. Originating in the field of dance, choreography in music refers to how various musical elements - such as melody, harmony, rhythm and timbre - are arranged and interact with each other to form a musical composition.

In the broadest sense, choreography in music can be understood as the organization of musical phrases, sections and forms, similar to the arrangement of movements and steps in a dance. This organization can occur at various levels, ranging from the microstructure of individual notes and chords to the macrostructure of entire pieces or works.

At the micro level of choreography, the placement and sequence of musical motifs and themes within a piece can play a significant role. The composer can carefully decide when and how to introduce, repeat, transform, or vary particular melodic or rhythmic elements to achieve a particular musical effect. This micro-choreography can help create a coherent and engaging musical narrative that takes the listener on a sonic journey.

At the macro level, choreography can encompass the structure and form of an entire piece or work. Here the composer can decide how different sections - such as introduction, exposition, development and recapitulation - are arranged and how they are connected to each other to create an organic and coherent musical flow. This macro-choreography can guide the emotional development and dramatic tension of a piece and provide the listener with a sense of narrative coherence.

Additionally, choreography can also include the placement and use of instruments and timbres within a composition. The composer can decide which instruments dominate a particular section or how different instruments work together to create certain soundscapes and textures. This orchestral choreography can help enrich the tonal variety and depth of a piece, providing the listener with a layered and immersive listening experience.

Overall, choreography in music is an essential aspect of the compositional art that contributes to structuring, organizing and designing musical works. Through the clever arrangement of melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and tonal elements, choreography can help make a musical composition a captivating and meaningful experience that touches and moves the listener.
