Additional info/contents The "Geuzenpenning" (Geuzen Medal) is awarded annually to people or organisations that have made a special contribution to democracy and against dictatorship, racism and discrimination. The original "Geuzen" fought against Spanish occupation in Holland in the 16th century; during the Second World War a resistance group against the Germans also called itself "De Geuzen". Psalm 43, which a group of condemned people sang in 1943 shortly before their execution, was processed by Jan de Haan in his opening work "De Geuzen Medal Fanfare", which he wrote for the 25th award of this special order.

Programme notes *: additional text

The origins of the Geuzenpenning go back to the Dutch struggle for independence in the 16th century. The "Geuzen" were a group of rebels who revolted against Spanish rule. Their resistance against oppression and in favour of Dutch freedom was of great importance and contributed significantly to the development of Dutch independence.

During the Second World War, a resistance group in the Netherlands took the name "De Geuzen". This group was made up of courageous men and women who fought against the German occupation. They distributed leaflets, collected information and committed acts of sabotage to strengthen the resistance against oppression. Their fearless commitment to freedom and democracy became a symbol of Dutch resistance.

Today, the Geuzenpenning is an award for people and organisations that stand in the tradition of the Geuzen and stand up for democracy, human rights and against oppression. It is awarded annually to individuals or groups who have distinguished themselves through their outstanding commitment to the principles of freedom, equality and solidarity.

The Geuzenpenning thus represents not only a historical tradition, but also a timeless symbol of resistance against oppression and injustice. Those who receive this award are honoured for their courage and determination to stand up for a fairer and more democratic society in the spirit of the Geuzen. The Geuzenpenning therefore remains not only a historical reminder of past struggles, but also a living legacy that carries on the spirit of resistance and democracy in the Netherlands and beyond. By awarding the Geuzenpenning annually, the Geuzenpenning recognises people who are working today for the same values that the Geuzen once fought for - freedom, justice and the overcoming of oppression.
