The Tales of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi and the composition of the same name by Ferrer Ferran for top level wind orchestra

The Tales of Pinocchio, written by Carlo Collodi, have been a staple of children's literature since their publication in 1883. These stories tell the adventures of a wooden puppet that comes to life and his journey to become a real boy. Ferrer Ferran, a contemporary composer, has captured and musically portrayed this timeless story in his composition for top level wind orchestra. The work is divided into four movements, each reflecting important episodes from Pinocchio's adventures.

Carlo Collodi, born in Florence, Italy in 1826, wrote "The Adventures of Pinocchio" as a serial novel for a children's magazine. The story begins with the woodcarver Geppetto, who carves a puppet from a piece of wood that comes to life. Pinocchio, the living wooden puppet, experiences numerous adventures and meets many characters who influence him on his journey to becoming human.

The story of Pinocchio deals with themes such as honesty, remorse and the pursuit of human values. Important characters besides Pinocchio and Geppetto are the Blue Fairy, the talking cricket and various other characters who either tempt Pinocchio or help him make the right decision.

Ferrer Ferran's composition "Pinocchio"

Ferrer Ferran's composition "Pinocchio" for top level wind orchestra is a musical narrative that captures the most important episodes and emotions from Collodi's story. The composition consists of four movements, each representing different scenes and characters.

- First movement: "Pinocchio, Geppetto and the Talking Cricket" (Lento e cantabile) - The first movement begins slowly and cantabile, with the gentle melodies depicting Pinocchio's creation and his first interactions with Geppetto and the talking cricket. The cricket acts as Pinocchio's conscience and tries to guide him on the right path.

- Second movement: "The Fairy with Turquoise Hair" (Largo molto espressivo): The second movement describes Pinocchio's encounter with the Blue Fairy, who is a key figure in his development. The music in this section is slow and very expressive, highlighting the fairy's magical and protective presence. The fairy is a source of wisdom and care for Pinocchio.

- Third movement: "The Field of Miracles" (Allegretto Grazioso) - In the third movement, the music takes listeners to the Field of Miracles, where Pinocchio encounters shady characters who promise him riches if he buries his coins. The melodies are graceful and playful, but also reflect the deception and trickery that Pinocchio faces.

- Fourth movement: "The Land of Toys - The Terrible Shark - Finally He Becomes a Boy" (Allegro Giocoso - Allegro furioso - Largo dolcemente e molto espressivo) - The fourth and final movement is divided into three sections:
- The Land of Toys: This section is cheerful and playful, representing the lure of the Land of Toys, where Pinocchio has fun with other boys but is ultimately turned into a donkey.
- The Terrible Shark: The tone changes dramatically to an angry Allegro, describing Pinocchio's encounter with the terrible shark that devours him.
- Finally He Becomes a Boy: The movement ends in a slow and very expressive Largo, representing Pinocchio's final transformation into a real boy, as a reward for his learning and good deeds.

Ferrer Ferran's "Pinocchio" is more than just a musical interpretation of the literary source. It is a work that conveys the emotional and moral lessons of Collodi's story through music. Each movement is carefully crafted to bring the characters and events to life and take the listener on a journey through Pinocchio's adventures.

The combination of Carlo Collodi's timeless stories and Ferrer Ferran's striking musical interpretation creates an impressive and moving experience. The composition "Pinocchio" for top level wind orchestra captures the essence of the story and conveys the emotions and lessons that Collodi once wanted to convey. This keeps the story of Pinocchio alive and relevant for new generations of listeners and musicians alike.
