Composer Van der Roost, Jan
Difficulty level 4
Evaluation level of countries D4 (German upper level)
Duration 9:45
Additional info/contents This commission came about through a strong friendship between the composer and the commissioning band:The Koninklijke Harmonie Rupelzonen-Boom.
The city of Boom lies next to the river Rupel, which was important in the history of the city's economic development. Among other industries, brick making flourished and became known across the borders. Despite this, the composer does not refer to any industrial elements in the piece, but focuses instead on the countryside. This is reflected in the music through a recurring pastoral-like style.
A rapid and energetic allegro refers, somewhat inconspicuously, to Leonard Bernstein's music. After the war, many bands performed transcriptions of classical repertoire and medleys. The Rupelzonen band was known as a pioneer, introducing new musical styles and composers, one of which was Bernstein.

Jan van der Roost's "By the River" unfolds as a mesmerizing musical painting that captures the rural idyll and industrial energy of Belgium's Rupel Zone boom region. Boom is a Belgian municipality in the Flanders region. Since 2005, Tomorrowland, one of the largest EDM (Electronic Dance Music) music festivals, has been held annually in the De Schorre Park adjacent to the town center.

"By the River" is a masterful combination of pastoral charm and dynamic energy, with the composer deftly weaving in Leonard Bernstein's influence and utilizing all the stops of the modern wind band.

The first part of "By the River" serves as a picturesque depiction of rural life in the industrial Rupel Zone boom region. Through skillful orchestration and melodic simplicity, van der Roost conjures an atmosphere of peace and serenity. The soundscape reflects the tranquil waterways and lush nature, while subtle hints of industrial presence shimmer in the background.

The transition to a dynamic Allegro marks a stark contrast that captures the industrial side of the region. Here the energy and hustle and bustle of the industrial landscape come to the fore. Van der Roost cleverly plays with different timbres and rhythms that reflect the diversity and complexity of industrial processes. The allusion to Leonard Bernstein, one of the most important American composers of the 20th century, adds an additional artistic dimension to the Allegro. It is as if van der Roost is entering into a creative dialogue with Bernstein's powerful music and placing it in the context of the Dutch industrial landscape.

"By the River" is not only a composition, but also a challenge for the modern wind orchestra. Van der Roost challenges all registers using a variety of timbres, rhythms and dynamic nuances. This diversity reflects the complex nature of the Rupel Zone Boom region and requires the highest level of attention and precision from the musicians.

For the audience, "By the River" is a sonic journey through a fascinating landscape. In order to grasp the thematic and melodic elements of this varied work, the listener's attention is required. Van der Roost creates a musical narrative that captures both the region's peaceful nature and vibrant industry.
