Composer Mussorgsky, Modest
Arranger Van Grevenbroek, Ton
Difficulty level 4
Additional info/contents Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" (1874) is a musical journey through an imaginary exhibition of paintings by his late friend Viktor Hartmann. Each movement evokes a different work of art with rich tonal colors and dramatic contrasts.

"The Hut on Chicken Legs (Baba Yaga)" is one of the most expressive and virtuosic movements of the cycle. It depicts the fearsome witch Baba Yaga from Slavic folklore, who lives in a hut on chicken legs. Mussorgsky's music is stormy and menacing, with lightning-fast runs and sharp accents that conjure the witch's wild flight. The piece is a prime example of musical imagination.

"The Great Gate of Kiev" forms the monumental conclusion of the cycle. Inspired by Hartmann's design for a grand city gate, this movement sounds like a hymn to national pride. Expansive chords, solemn melodies, and chimes evoke a magnificent structure and a feeling of spiritual grandeur. The music culminates in a triumphant climax – a sonic cathedral.
