Difficulty level 4
Duration 13:59
Additional info/contents In the present score there are 5 percussion parts, but there is also available a reduced percussion score written for three parts. These parsts can be downloaded from www.noteservice.no
To the conductor:
The oboe part is not written into the score, but is provided in the score (obbligato part / doubling of other parts).
The percussionists have an important role throughout the piece, feel free to give them prominence!
In some places it is notated "Cymbal upside down on the timpani": Use the lowest notes on the timpani, aim for a "mystical" sound. Experiment! Intro/measure 1- 30: Restrained, rather too weak than too strong! Stay calm, even in poco piu mosso.
Bars 43 - 50: Play with great intensity in the bass group, pay attention to legato bows and accents.
Bars 57 - 96: Let the timpani take centre stage here!
Bars 102 - 110: To minimise possible intonation problems, it may be worth practising the woodwind group before adding the dissonant horn part. Likewise from 125.
Bars 112 - 120: The mines at Modum have one of the country's largest occurrences of bats. Here it's up to the conductor to get the band to make as much "fluttering" as possible with air and the clacking of valves. Utilise percussion. Note dynamics in woodwinds. Make sure the trumpet and trombone have a steady rhythm and tempo.
Bars 135 - 213: Let the metal blocks, anvil and other percussion come out well here. Let there really be hammering and banging and working in the mine tunnels. This episode builds dramatically towards the end and suggests an accident.
Bar 217 - 252: Funeral march. Let this one be dramatic. Don't let it be too "beautiful" and petty, it's a tragedy that has happened, and the dead are being carried out of the mine. Utilise the bass drum and timpani! Pay attention to intonation, and strive for long lines (not phrases with two and two bars!).
From bar 258: Here there will be dancing and partying. A dance theme is introduced in 266, and a local gallop follows from 306.
Have a lively, light playing style in the melody parts, while in the lower parts it is sometimes suggested that everything was not as elegant and sober (e.g. 298, 354 and from 370).
Pay close attention to dynamics!

Alternative percussion parts for three performers are available for download under "additional files"
