Composer Jaeggi, Stephan
Arranger Kurmann, Edy
Difficulty level 4
Evaluation level of countries C4 (Swiss 1st class); D5 (German highest level)
Duration 13:52
Additional info/contents The work was commissioned in the thirties of the last century by the composer from Fulenbach. "The Mysterious Mask" was originally intended as an "hour choir" for the highest class at the "Eidgenössische Musikfest". It has hardly been performed since then. The work itself is not extremely difficult. The difficulties lie more in the tonal range and in the intonation. The conductor must be able to get through the innumerable changes in tempo without making mistakes. To achieve the sound balance so that the piece sounds good is also a task for which the musicians must receive very precise instructions from the conductor.

"The Mysterious Mask" is a fascinating and impressive composition by the Swiss composer Stephan Jaeggi (1903-1957). Jaeggi, who is best known for his works for wind orchestras, created a piece with this composition that impresses with its mysterious atmosphere and musical sophistication. "The Mysterious Mask" is an excellent example of Jaeggi's ability to convey moods and emotions through music.

Stephan Jaeggi was born in Switzerland in 1903 and developed into one of the best-known composers and conductors of wind music in Europe. He studied at the conservatory in Basel and later worked as a conductor and composer. Jaeggi wrote a large number of works for wind orchestras that are characterized by their melodic beauty, harmonic complexity and rhythmic variety. His compositions are still an integral part of the repertoire of many wind orchestras today.

"The Mysterious Mask" is a work that stands out for its dense atmosphere and musical storytelling. The composition creates a mystical and mysterious mood that transports the listener into a world of mystery and intrigue. Jaeggi uses the full range of the wind orchestra to create the mysterious atmosphere of the piece. The instrumentation is rich and varied, with woodwinds, brass and percussion all making equal use. The dynamics of the piece range from quiet, almost whispering passages to powerful, intense climaxes that underline the tension and drama of the music.

The melodies in "The Mysterious Mask" are often intricate and unpredictable, which contributes to the mysterious mood of the piece. Jaeggi uses modal keys and unconventional harmonic progressions to create an atmosphere of the unknown and mysterious. The harmonic structures are complex and rich in dissonances that often resolve unexpectedly, capturing the listener's attention.

The rhythmic structure of the piece is as complex and varied as the melodies and harmonics. Jaeggi plays with different time signatures and rhythms to create tension and unpredictability. The structure of the piece does not follow a traditional form, but rather develops like a narrative, with each new passage opening another chapter in the mysterious story.

"The Mysterious Mask" is a remarkable work in the wind orchestra repertoire that fascinates both musicians and listeners alike. The composition places high demands on the musicians, both technically and interpretatively. The players must be able to master the complex rhythms and harmonic structures precisely, while convincingly conveying the mysterious atmosphere of the piece.

Stephan Jaeggi's "The Mysterious Mask" is an impressive composition that captivates with its dense atmosphere and musical complexity. The work shows Jaeggi's mastery in the use of the wind orchestra and his ability to create a gripping and mysterious narrative through music. "The Mysterious Mask" remains an important contribution to wind music literature and a fascinating listening experience for all who enter into its mysterious world.
