Programme notes *: additional text

"Danza Sinfonica" by James Barnes is a one-movement work of virtuoso brilliance for wind orchestra, taking full advantage of the rich sound world and technical possibilities of this instrumentation. The piece is decidedly southern in character, combining rhapsodic elements with expressive thematic variations. It is a work of brilliance and mastery that celebrates the pure joy of dancing.

The composition begins with a subtle introduction, introducing most of the thematic material in the first fifty bars. This restrained opening leads to a sudden climax when a stunning fanfare appears. This dramatic caesura marks the transition to an extended middle section, which forms the heart of the work.

The structure of "Danza Sinfonica" follows a large ABA form typically found in symphonic works. The first section introduces the basic thematic elements and establishes the southern dance character. The middle section develops these themes further, offering extended variations that are rhapsodic in nature. Here Barnes shows his compositional finesse, combining various instrumental groupings and timbres with virtuosity.

The work is rich in solo passages, sudden bursts in the tutti (the entire instrumentation), strong harmonies and varied timbres. The percussion plays a particularly prominent role, with virtuoso patterns and rhythmic energy that enhance the dance character. Barnes uses the full dynamic range of the wind orchestra instrumentation, creating a gripping and stirring musical experience.

"Danza Sinfonica" is not only a technically demanding work, but also a work of great artistic importance. It combines the traditions of southern dance with modern compositional techniques and offers the musicians the opportunity to demonstrate their virtuoso skills. The joy of dance conveyed by the work is palpable for the audience and creates a connection between composer, performer and listener.

"Danza Sinfonica" by James Barnes is an impressive example of the versatility and artistic potential of wind orchestra compositions. With its brilliant instrumentation, lively rhythms and expressive melodies, the work offers a dynamic and stirring presentation of dance music. Barnes' ability to capture the nuances of southern dance while integrating modern orchestral splendor makes "Danza Sinfonica" a significant contribution to contemporary wind orchestra literature.
