Originally used as useful tools in engineering and physics, the Kaleidoskop became more and more a popular pastime for children. Turning and turning, creating new pictures has of course something very fairy-tale like. Even the slightest mechanical change makes it possible to dive into a wonderful world. The kaleidoscope was originally already known to the ancient Greeks, but was only rediscovered in 1816 by the Scottish physicist David Brewster and registered as a patent in 1817. Brewster came across it in the course of his research on the polarization of birefringent crystals when he observed such crystals in a reflecting metal tube.
