Additional info/contents Albion Heritage was commissioned by the Association for Music in International Schools for the AMIS International Honor Band and Choir Festival, which took place in London in March 2008. AMIS is dedicated to the promotion of excellence in all levels of music education and sponsors a variety of music festivals annually which are especially designed to benefit students in international schools in Europe and Middle East.
The commission stipulated a piece with a "British" feel so composer Philip Sparke decided to write a folk song fantasy based on tunes from various parts of the British Isles. It opens with Brighton Camp, an English version of The Girl I Left Behind Me, which is treated to a variety of twists and turns. The slower central section is based on the Scottish tune O Waly, Waly (also known as The Water is Wide) which dates from the beginning of 18th century. This is then followed by a robust setting of the famous Welsh tune, Men of Harlech, which was first published in 1784 and is said to describe the repeated sieges of Harlech Castle in the 15th century.

"Albion Heritage" by Philip Sparke is a fascinating composition based on folk tunes from various parts of the British Isles. The folk song fantasy offers a sonic journey through the rich musical traditions of England, Scotland and Wales. Through the clever use of different melodies, an impressive musical tableau unfolds that takes the listener into the heartbeat of British folklore.

"Brighton Camp" - The lively start:
The composition opens with "Brighton Camp", an English version of the traditional song "The Girl I Left Behind Me". Sparke presents a lively and energetic interpretation of this folk song, enriching it with clever twists and variations. The melody speaks of farewell and wanderlust, and Sparke gives it a fresh, modern dynamic that immediately transports the listener into the world of British heritage.

"O Waly, Waly" - The slow middle part:
The slower middle section of the composition is based on the Scottish melody "O Waly, Waly", also known as "The Water is Wide". This melody, which dates back to the early 18th century, is interpreted by Sparke in a captivating and sensitive way. Here he creates an atmospheric pause that allows the listener to immerse themselves in the gentle and melodic sounds of Scottish folklore.

"Men of Harlech" - The robust Welsh version:
The conclusion of "Albion Heritage" presents a robust version of the Welsh tune "Men of Harlech". This tune, first published in 1784, commemorates the sieges of Harlech Castle in the 15th century. Sparke gives this piece a powerful and heroic dimension, musically capturing the strength and determination of the men of Harlech. The combative sounds reflect the historical importance of Welsh and its resilience.

Philip Sparke's Albion Heritage is a masterful folk song fantasy that celebrates the cultural diversity and musical splendor of the British Isles. This composition honors not only the folk melodies but also the cultural heritage of England, Scotland and Wales, reminding listeners of the beauty and diversity of British folklore.
