Composer Cesarini, Franco
Opus no. Op.39a
Difficulty level 3
Evaluation level of countries C3 (Swiss 2nd class); D3 (German medium level)
Duration 9:15
Additional info/contents As basis for this four-movement composition, Franco Cesarini has used four anonymous renaissance pieces, and by exploiting the colours of the modern concert band, he has recreated the atmosphere of these fascinating musical forms. The stately pavane-like first movement, entitled Vive Henry IV - which dates from 1590 - is followed by a faster movement titled Kemp's Jig (c.1600). The third movement - Canario(c.1500) - starts slowly, but soon changes into a fast 6/8 time. The suite concludes with Bransle de Chevaux (c.1590) bringing the suite to a spectacular close.

The "Renaissance Suite" by Franco Cesarini is a captivating musical work that combines the timeless sounds of the Renaissance with the modern timbres of a wind orchestra. Franco Cesarini, a renowned contemporary composer, has skilfully combined four pieces by unknown composers from the Renaissance into a harmonious work of art in this suite. The suite takes the listener on a fascinating journey into the past and gives new life to forgotten musical forms. The "Renaissance Suite" consists of four movements, each of which is a unique musical jewel and at the same time merges into a harmonious whole. Franco Cesarini uses the original compositions of the Renaissance composers as a basis and gives them a modern interpretation that fully exploits the diverse sound possibilities of a wind orchestra.

The first movement of the suite, "Pavane Vive Henry IV", is an impressive homage to the royal splendour of the Renaissance. Cesarini brings the sublime elegance of the pavane to life, while skilfully using the modern wind orchestra to enhance the atmosphere of royal splendour and ceremony. The carefully crafted harmonies and subtle dynamics give this movement a majestic feel.

The second movement, "Kemp's Jig", takes the listener into a livelier and faster mood. This movement reflects the lively side of the Renaissance, with joyful dance rhythms and infectious energy. Franco Cesarini cleverly uses the modern wind orchestra to accentuate the lively melodies and rhythmic momentum of these traditional dances.

"Canario", the third movement of the suite, captures the lively and exotic atmosphere of the dance of the same name. Here Cesarini skilfully fuses the sounds of the Renaissance with the rich timbres of the wind orchestra to create a sound world that is both nostalgic and refreshing. The melodic variety and precise orchestration give this movement a special appeal.

The suite reaches its spectacular climax with the fourth movement, "Bransle de Chevaux". This movement leads the listener to an impressive finale with powerful rhythms, dynamic contrasts and rousing melodies. Cesarini uses the possibilities of the modern wind orchestra to heighten the tension and intensity of this final movement, rounding off the suite in an impressive way.

Franco Cesarini's "Renaissance Suite" is a masterful example of the fusion of historical musical forms and contemporary orchestral art. Through the skilful use of unknown Renaissance compositions and the creative possibilities of the wind orchestra, Cesarini succeeds in building a musical bridge between past and present. The suite enchants the listener with its variety of moods, its masterful orchestration and its lively interpretation of Renaissance music. The "Renaissance Suite" thus stands as an impressive testimony to the timeless power of music that fascinates and touches across the centuries.
