Additional info/contents A Monmouth Overture begins in a lively mood and presents The Agincourt Song as its central theme. This 15th century tune was written in honour of Henry V of England's victory at Agincourt in 1415, when English archers gloriously triumphed over a much larger but outdated French army. Henry was born in Monmouth in 1387 - hence the title of this historically inspired work.

The "Monmouth Overture" by Philip Sparke is a piece of music based on a historical melody from the 15th century and celebrates the victory of Henry V of England at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. The title of the work refers to Henry's birthplace, the town of Monmouth in Wales.

The 'Monmouth Overture' begins with a lively and festive mood, reflecting the strength and will to win of Henry's troops. The central theme of the piece is 'The Agincourt Song', a historic tune written in honour of the victory at Agincourt. This melody lends the piece a majestic and heroic atmosphere.

The melody "The Agincourt Song" is characteristic of 15th century music and is characterised by simple melodies, clear structures and a festive character. In the "Monmouth Overture", this melody is updated using modern instrumentation and arrangement techniques and placed in a contemporary musical context.

The Monmouth Overture is an impressive and festive piece of music that celebrates the historical roots of the music and the importance of the Battle of Agincourt in English history. The piece is characterised by lively rhythms, majestic melodies and a powerful orchestration that transports the listener into the world of medieval England and takes them on a musical journey through history.

In 2007 Philip Sparke was appointed composer-in-residence to Monmouth School, situated on the Welsh/English border. The school, which has a venerable history dating back to 1614, has a thriving music department which boasts two concert bands, in co-operation with the nearby "Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls", and a brass band. This exciting and innovative appointment involved three visits by the composer during the year as well as as the commissioning of a new piece for each of the bands, all of which were premiered in a concert at the end of the year.

Monmouth School is an independent boys' boarding and day school in Monmouth, Wales. The school was founded in 1614 with a bequest from William Jones, a successful merchant and trader. The School is run as a trust, the William Jones's Schools Foundation, by the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers, one of the livery companies, and has close links to its sister school, Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls. In 2018, the Haberdashers renamed their group of schools in the town, the Monmouth Schools, and made corresponding changes to the names of the boys' and girls' schools.
