A hypothetical account of "Opus 100" might focus on the celebratory nature of the composition and emphasize its potential significance as a milestone in Ford's creative period. One could analyze the structure, style and musical elements to see the composer's artistic development.

The meaning of "Opus" in music

The term "opus" has a special meaning in music and is used to characterise works by composers. Originally from Latin, "opus" simply means "work" or "labour". In musical terminology, however, it is used more specifically to refer to a particular work by a composer, usually in conjunction with numbering to distinguish different works within a composer's overall repertoire.

The use of "opus" began in the 18th century and was popularised in particular by famous composers such as Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert. One example is Beethoven's famous "Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67", where "Op. 67" refers to the opus or work number. This numbering allowed composers to organise and catalogue their works, which was invaluable for posterity.

It is important to note that the use of "opus" does not necessarily imply a chronological order of a composer's compositions. Rather, it can happen that a composer develops various works in parallel and later combines them into a specific "opus". In modern music, the term "opus" is still used, primarily in classical music, but also in other genres such as jazz or contemporary music. It remains a symbol for the creative work and the unique artistic expressiveness of a composer. Overall, "opus" is a term closely associated with musical creation and heritage and continues to be used to characterise and honour the works of significant composers.
