Additional info/contents Mandágora ia a piece that evokes the Portuguese discoverers' maritime expansion during the renaissance. It starts with the joyful departure of the ships and continues with the sailors' vagueness as to their fate. After a series of "favourable winds" there is a succession of devastating storms and moments of new hope, until the ships finally arrive safe and well. This work won the 1st Prize of the most important Portuguese wind band composition contest in 2002: Silva Dionísio Prize.

The composition "Mandrágora" by Luis Cardoso takes the listener on a musical journey through the maritime expansion of Portuguese explorers during the Renaissance period. The title "Mandrágora" itself has a symbolic meaning and plays a central role in the depiction of the seafarers' complex experiences. Mandragora, or mandrake, is a plant that is often associated with magical properties and mystical powers in mythology and folklore. In the Renaissance period, it was regarded as a symbol of mystery and sorcery. In the connection to Luis Cardoso's composition, the "Mandrágora" functions as a metaphor for the unpredictable and mystical elements that the Portuguese explorers experienced on their sea voyages.

The musical journey in "Mandrágora" reflects the highs and lows of maritime expansion. The beginning of the composition, with a festive departure of the ships, conveys the excitement and pride of the explorers venturing into unknown waters. However, the sailors are soon confronted with the uncertainty of their journey. Luis Cardoso's composition skilfully integrates narrative elements to characterise the various stages of the voyage. Favourable winds are depicted through lively melodies and rhythmic passages, while storms are conveyed through dramatic and conflict-laden musical sections. The music thus reflects the changing challenges and emotions faced by the explorers.

In between the stormy sections, there are moments of hope reflected in the music. Melodic motifs of determination and confidence symbolise the sailors' faith in their mission. The final return to the home harbour is represented by triumphant melodies and festive sounds, celebrating the successful completion of the voyage.

"Mandrágora" is characterised by an impressive tonal variety. Luis Cardoso utilises the instrumental possibilities to depict the complexity of emotions and events. From the lively winds to the stormy percussion passages, a rich musical landscape is created that captures the dramatic aspects of the voyages of discovery.

Overall, the composition "Mandrágora" by Luis Cardoso shows a masterful combination of music and storytelling. The title as such adds symbolic depth to the composition and allows the listener to experience the maritime expansion of the Portuguese explorers through a sonic journey from festive departure to uncertainty to triumphant return. "Mandrágora" is therefore not only a musical representation of the past, but also of the timeless fascination and challenges of voyages of discovery.
