Composer Bösendorfer, Alfred

Additional info/contents In many of his works, Alfred Bösendorfer demonstrates his preference for folkloristic musical elements of different peoples or for typical characteristics of different cultural regions in Europe. They inspire him and at the same time are a guarantee for the cross-border popularity that his oeuvre enjoys. In the work "Scandinavia" the composer chooses the free, rhapsodic form to take a musical journey through the individual countries of Scandinavia.

»Scandinavia« essentially consists of four parts. Bösendorfer begins his journey in the far north, in Lapland. As a prelude, a short, forward-moving festival march sounds, with which the listener could associate the procession of reindeer on their pastures and the Lapp people nomadic in the summer. After just a few bars, this festivo leads to a delicate sound texture from the woodwinds, which is characterized by a religious style in the cantabile.

After repeating the opening music, the composer takes us to Sweden in the second part. Here Bösendorfer implies a rural folk festival with sometimes melancholy dance styles. This part of the work is characterized by long tones and sounds. They are reminiscent of the drone of a bagpipe and repeating melodic turns that give the listener the impression of a hurdy-gurdy.

The third part of the composition takes us to Norway. Dark chords in the brass instruments, expressive solos in the woodwinds, a wonderful cantabile and a contemplative pensioroso express fullness and breadth. Beautiful, rich harmonies and delicate melancholic lyricism are reminiscent of the great Edvard Grieg, whose 100th anniversary of death was commemorated by the music world in 2007.

In the fourth part we leave the deep forests and the streams rushing into the sea in Norway and join in with an exuberant celebration of young, carefree people in Denmark. Exuberant joie de vivre and fiery, Slavic-like dance forms are expressed by the composer through contrapuntal, closely guided variety of voices, colorful orchestration and lush melodies.

With »Scandinavia«, Alfred Bösendorfer has created a work that can be seen as an enormous enrichment of literature, especially in middle and high school.

Scandinavia, the region in northern Europe, is rich in fascinating nature and cultural diversity. Each country has its unique characteristics, be it the breathtaking nature of Finland, the traditional dances of Sweden, the winter magic of Norway or the festive atmosphere at Tivoli in Denmark.

Finland: lakes, moors and forests
Finland, the land of a thousand lakes, is characterized by its breathtaking natural landscape. The numerous lakes, including Lake Saimaa, not only offer a picturesque backdrop, but also shape the daily lives of Finns. The endless forests and extensive moors complete the landscape and offer a paradise for nature lovers. Finland is actively committed to environmental protection and preserves its unique nature, which is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species.

Sweden: Peasant dance
Swedish culture is rich in traditional dances, of which the Peasant Dance (Polska) is one of the most famous. This dance, often performed at festivals and celebrations in the countryside, reflects the joy of life and community connection. The dancers often wear traditional costumes, and the rhythmic steps and turns give the peasant dance a unique dynamic that characterizes Swedish folk culture.

Norway in winter:
Norway turns into a magical fairytale land in winter. The snow-covered landscapes, majestic fjords and the northern lights create an enchanting atmosphere. Winter activities like skiing, dog sledding and entering the Arctic Circle make Norway a winter paradise for adventure seekers. Norwegians celebrate winter with festivals and traditional events that emphasize the warmth of community amid the icy backdrop.

Denmark: A celebration at Tivoli
Denmark is home to the famous Tivoli in Copenhagen, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. Here tradition and entertainment merge in a unique atmosphere. On festive occasions, such as the Danish National Day or Christmas, the Tivoli becomes a place of joy and togetherness. The colorful lights, rides and culinary delights create a festive atmosphere that delights Danes and visitors alike.

Scandinavia offers a fascinating mix of natural wonders, traditional customs and festive celebrations. From the pristine lakes and forests of Finland to the traditional dances of Sweden, the winter magic of Norway and the joyous celebrations of Tivoli in Denmark, each region contributes to the rich diversity that makes Scandinavia a unique destination.
