Composer Van der Roost, Jan
Difficulty level 3
Evaluation level of countries D3 (German medium level)
Duration 9:12
Additional info/contents The band specifically asked the composer to base the work on a choral-like subject matter. He has done so convincingly: from the very first measures on, a chorale melody is presented by the saxophone register. Then follows a more extensively orchestrated version of the same theme material, after which the melodic themes become more varied - with a few surprising harmonic turns. Next, a spicy allegro comes forward with alternating playful and melodic themes, which are most evident in the baritone and euphonium section. A counterpoint-like built-up passage - performed by the entire saxophone section - prepares for the denouement (maestoso), in which the chorale melody is complemented by the allegro theme.

The term "Domus" comes from Latin and means "home" or "house". In music, "Domus" embodies a sense of belonging, an acoustic space where listeners find comfort and familiarity. This report examines the complex concept of "domus" in the field of music and explores its meaning and applications in various musical contexts.

The concept of "Domus" in music can be traced back through centuries of musical evolution. In ancient times, music often served as a communal experience, fostering a sense of unity and belonging among listeners. As musical traditions developed, composers and musicians sought to create compositions that resonated with audiences on an emotional level and provided an acoustic retreat like home.

In musical compositions, "domus" can manifest itself in various forms. It can be reflected in melodies that evoke feelings of warmth and comfort, harmonies that envelop the listener like an intimate embrace, or rhythms that pulsate with the heartbeat of shared experiences. Whether through classical symphonies, folk songs or contemporary pop music, musicians have sought to capture the essence of "Domus" in their creations, inviting listeners into a musical home where they can find solace and connection.

The concept of "domus" in music transcends cultural boundaries and appeals to people from different backgrounds and traditions. In some cultures, music plays a central role in community events and rituals, acting as a unifying force that strengthens social bonds and consolidates cultural identity. Whether in the lively festivals of Latin America, the melancholic blues sounds of the American South, or the complex rhythms of West African drumming music, music serves as a cultural “domus” where people come together to celebrate, mourn, and connect with one another.

In today's digital world, the concept of "Domus" has taken on new dimensions with the introduction of online streaming platforms and virtual concerts. Although physical spaces may be limited, music continues to provide a sense of belonging and community for listeners around the world. Artists use social media, livestreaming and virtual reality technologies to create immersive musical experiences that transcend geographic boundaries and bring people together in a virtual "domus" where they can share their love of music and connect with like-minded people.

In summary, the concept of "Domus" in music represents more than just a physical space - it embodies a feeling of belonging, connection and shared experiences. Whether through classical symphonies, folk songs or contemporary hits, music has the power to create a sonic sanctuary where listeners can find comfort, security and community. As we continue to navigate the ever-changing landscape of music in the digital age, the idea of "Domus" remains a timeless reminder of the profound impact music has on our lives.
