Evaluation level of countries A5 (Austrian E level); C4 (Swiss 1st class); D5 (German highest level)
Duration 11:11
Additional info/contents The composition is a free rhapsody, divided into four distinct movements of several famous Bulgarian folk songs. These songs have a very old tradition and stem from both the antique world of Byzantium and even earlier in the ancient and mysterious civilization of the Thrace region. In the beginning they were monodic songs, then diaphonic, with characteristic dissonances of major and minor second which make them unique. What makes these songs so fascinating are also the seductive and complex irregular rhythms. The composer, while remaining faithful to the original spirit of the songs, has not hesitated to broaden the musical ideas, enriching them and making them more suitable to the rich palette of colors of contemporary wind bands.

Bulgarian folk music is rich in traditions and characteristics, characterized by a variety of rhythms, melodies and instrumentation. This music reflects the cultural diversity and historical influences of the country. The composition "Bulgarian Dances (In Memoriam Alfred Reed)" by Franco Cesarini is a tribute to Bulgarian folk music and at the same time a piece in memory of Alfred Reed. The composition consists of four movements that capture different aspects of this musical tradition.

Bulgarian folk music is known for its asymmetrical rhythms, also known as "uneven beats", which are quite different from Western music. These rhythms are often notated in odd time signatures such as 7/8, 9/8 or 11/16 and give the music a distinctive momentum and energy. Melodies are often modal and use scales such as the pentatonic or the Aeolian scale. Traditional instruments such as the gadulka (a string instrument), the kaval (a flute) and the tupan (a drum) play a central role.

The odd time signatures typical of Bulgarian music produce complex and dynamic rhythms, often featuring rapid changes and syncopated patterns. These rhythms are also reflected in the dances, which are often energetic and lively. Bulgarian melodies are often written in old church modes and use microtonal intervals, which give the melodies a distinctive sound. These melodies are often rich in ornamentation and decoration. Traditional instruments give Bulgarian folk music its characteristic sound. The gadulka and the kaval are particularly prominent and are often used in solo passages supported by rhythmic accompaniment from the tupan.

"Bulgarian Dances" by Franco Cesarini

Franco Cesarini captured the essence of Bulgarian folk music in his composition "Bulgarian Dances" and translated it into a rhapsody for wind orchestra. The four movements of the work are based on traditional songs and dances that represent different regions and musical styles of Bulgaria.

1. Polegnala e Pschenitza - Lentissimo (Harvest Song from Thrace): This movement begins slowly and solemnly, with a melancholy melody that reflects the calm and contemplation of the harvest song from the Thrace region. The harmonies are simple but expressive, and the orchestration emphasizes the gentle sounds of the woodwinds and strings.

2. Erghen Diado - Presto con fuoco (Song of Shopsko): A lively and energetic movement that captures the impetuous nature of the song from the Shopsko region. Fast tempos and irregular time signatures such as 7/8 and 9/8 create a sense of movement and vitality. The brass and percussion add to the dynamic and powerful atmosphere.
3. Polegnala e Todora - Andante sereno - poco piu mosso (Todora is Taking a Nap): A calm and peaceful movement depicting the scene of Todora taking a nap. The music is lyrical and delicate, with soft melodies and harmonic accompaniments that create an atmosphere of calm and peace.
4. Yabalko Zlatna - Con fuoco (The Golden Apple): The final movement is lively and fiery, with fast rhythms and a festive melody that tells the story of the golden apple. The dynamic orchestration and virtuoso passages for different instrument groups create an exciting and stirring final mood.

Franco Cesarini's "Bulgarian Dances" is a masterful homage to the rich and diverse tradition of Bulgarian folk music. Through the four movements of the composition, he succeeds in capturing the different facets of this musical tradition and making it accessible to a wide audience. The complex rhythms, melodic lines and careful orchestration reflect the essence of Bulgarian music while honoring the legacy of Alfred Reed, a significant composer and conductor. The composition is not only a musical experience, but also a cultural journey through the musical landscapes of Bulgaria.
