Additional info/contents This composition is the composer's tribute to the musical heritage of Friuli in Italy. This rural region, which transformed from a formerly very poor area into a flourishing, fertile landscape, gave rise to a dance, the Furlana, around the 15th/16th century, which quickly spread throughout Europe. Folk Music in Friuli and the "Piccola Suite Italiana" by Franco Cesarini

The folk music of Friuli, a rural region in northeastern Italy, is a significant expression of the cultural heritage and social identity of the people who live there. A magnificent continuation of this tradition is the composition "Piccola Suite Italiana" by the Swiss composer Franco Cesarini, which can be considered a homage to the musical roots and rich treasure of folk songs and dances of Friuli.

Friuli has undergone a remarkable transformation over the centuries, from a once poor region to a fertile, prosperous region. This economic and cultural development is also evident in Friuli's music. Of particular note is the dance "Furlana," which originated around the 15th and 16th centuries. This lively dance quickly gained popularity and spread beyond the region's borders throughout Europe. The Furlana symbolizes the cultural vitality and communal celebrations that have accompanied the people of Friuli over the centuries.

The composition "Piccola Suite Italiana" by Franco Cesarini

In the "Piccola Suite Italiana," Franco Cesarini conveys the essence and rhythm of Friulian folk music in a form suitable for wind orchestra. The suite consists of three movements that illuminate different facets of the folkloric tradition:

1. Se jo vos de maridami - This movement refers to a traditional folk custom, perhaps referring to wedding rites and celebrations that bring the community together.

2. Nina-Nana - A rocking melody, probably conceived as a lullaby, underscoring the tender relationships within families and between generations.

3. La sagra dai falcons - This movement evokes the cultural life of Friuli, which is deeply connected to festivals and ritual celebrations, in which hunting often plays a role.

Through these three movements, Cesarini conveys a vivid picture of Friuli and its traditional music, transforming elements of folk song into a harmonious and accessible form.

The musical history of Friuli is rich in folk songs, often influenced by religious music. In the 19th century, folk songs flourished in their popular form of the "villotta," with many songs being recorded and transformed into conventional keys. These adaptations, which served to make the songs more accessible to a wider audience, nevertheless preserved the spirit and identity of the original melodies. Melodic "errors" were corrected, monophonic songs were arranged in polyphonic arrangements, and modally oriented songs were transformed into tonal structures.

A notable aspect of Friulian music is the close connection between religious and secular music. Many folk songs, especially hymns and psalms, reflect the spiritual beliefs and ritual practices of the community and emphasize the role of music in the collective cultural memory.

The instrumentation of Friulian folk music is diverse. Typical accompanying instruments include woodwind instruments such as the clarin (clarinet), the vacje (or liron), two traditional mallet- and double bass-like instruments, and the accordion, which plays a special role in accompanying dances. These instruments contribute to the characteristic timbre of Friulian music and underline its lively and festive character.

The “Piccola Suite Italiana” by Franco Cesarini is therefore not just a musical composition, but an independent cultural manifesto that honors the rich and vibrant heritage of folk music in Friuli. It connects past and present, opening a window to the soundscapes of a region shaped by its traditional music and cultural practices. The suite invites the audience to experience the joy, pride and identity of the Friulian people through the universal language of music.
