Programme notes *: A market in Florence during the Renaissance was a scene of vibrant life, hustle and bustle and cultural exchange. Florence, a thriving city at the center of the Renaissance movement in Italy, was home to a variety of markets that played an important role in the daily lives of residents while also being a center for trade, art and culture. The markets of Florence were not only places of trade, but also social meeting places where people from different classes and professions came together to buy and sell goods, exchange news and socialize. The markets were a vibrant expression of urban life and reflected the diversity and wealth of Florentine society. One of the most famous markets in Florence during the Renaissance was the Mercato Nuovo, the "New Market", founded in the 11th century and located in the heart of the city on the banks of the Arno.
