Additional info/contents Zdenek Lukaš's roots have their origins in Czech musical thought, especially in folk music, and are enriched by strictly selected elements of 20th century modern music. In the field of wind music, Lukaš has received special recognition for his monumental "Sinfonia brevis". This work was used as a compulsory piece of the first division at the World Wind Music Festival (WMC = World Music Contest) in Kerkrade in 1997.

In Metamorphoses" Lukaš stylistically follows authentic folklore and develops simple melodic lines to become most artful sonorous structures. A feature which also holds true for many other works by the composer. This effective piece opens with a trumpet solo and some sections are kind ov governed by the sonorous timbre of the narrow bore brass. This makes "Metamorphoses" sound all bright and festive.

"Metamorphoses" in music and the composition of the same name by Zdenek Lukas

The term "metamorphoses" in music refers to the musical technique of changing and developing a theme or melody through various processes such as variation, transformation or modulation. This technique is used to expand and deepen musical ideas and plays an important role in composition to create dynamic and layered soundscapes.

Metamorphosis is a concept found in many musical genres and eras. It involves the constant change and adaptation of a musical motif or theme to create different emotions and moods. Common methods include:
- Variation: A melody is varied by changes in rhythm, harmony, dynamics or orchestration.
- Modulation: The melody or theme is transferred to a different key to create contrast and tension.
- Transformation: The original theme is changed by structural changes such as inversion, enlargement or reduction.

These techniques are often used in classical music to shape the development and progression of a piece. A well-known example is "Metamorphoses" by Richard Strauss, a piece for 23 solo strings that uses thematic transformations to create a deep emotional journey.

"Metamorphoses" by Zdenek Lukas

The composition "Metamorphoses" for wind orchestra by Zdenek Lukas is an outstanding example of the application of this technique in contemporary wind music. Stylistically, Lukas draws on authentic folk music and develops simple melodic lines into elaborate sound structures. This technique is particularly evident in the way he uses harmonic developments and rhythmic subtleties.

- Introduction with trumpet solo: The work begins with an impressive trumpet solo that introduces the central melody. This melody is simple but succinct and serves as a starting point for the Metamorphoses to come.

- Harmonic developments: Lukas uses complex harmonies to transform the simple melody. Modulations and harmonic variations create a rich and layered soundscape.
- Rhythmic subtleties: The rhythmic elements in "Metamorphoses" are carefully designed to give the music dynamism and movement. Syncopations, shifted accents and changing time signatures add to the complexity of the work.

The use of narrow-scale brass is particularly striking. This type of instrument, especially the trumpets and horns, gives the work its radiant, celebratory character. The brass dominates the sound at times and provides powerful and festive moments.

The work is characterized by a constant alternation between lyrical passages and powerful, celebratory sections. The metamorphoses of the melody through different instrument groups and the harmonic and rhythmic variations create a dynamic and emotional journey. The radiant sound character of the brass gives the composition a majestic and festive atmosphere that is both solemn and sublime.

"Metamorphoses" by Zdenek Lukas is a striking example of the application of metamorphosis in music. By drawing on folk music and artfully developing simple melodic lines, Lukas creates a work that is both traditional and innovative. The harmonic developments, rhythmic subtleties and incisive use of brass make "Metamorphoses" a powerful and moving composition that implements the concept of metamorphosis in a striking way. This composition shows how musical transformations can open up deep emotional and artistic expression possibilities, and it remains a significant work in the wind orchestra repertoire.
