The tragic story of Egmont in literature and the composition for wind orchestra "Egmont" by Bert Appermont

The tragic story of Count Lamoral von Egmont has inspired many artists and has been reworked many times in literature, especially by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, as well as in music. An impressive adaptation of this historical tale is the composition "Egmont" for wind orchestra by Bert Appermont. This work tells the story of Egmont in four movements that musically capture both his personal tragedy and the historical circumstances of his time.

1st movement: Egmont's wedding
The work begins with an emotional melody that represents the person of Egmont and recurs in numerous variations throughout the piece. This melody captures the essence and character of the count. This is followed by a cheerful, virtuoso dance from the Renaissance that conveys the atmosphere of a wedding in the 16th century. Although it does not explicitly describe the wedding between Count Lamoral of Egmont and Duchess Sabina of Bavaria, the music captures the festive mood and music of the time. Towards the end of the first movement, Spanish influences become more and more audible, symbolizing the Spanish occupation of the Netherlands. These musical elements also illustrate Egmont's loyalty to the Spanish king, for whom he fought several successful battles.

2nd movement: Egmont and Philip II
The second movement introduces the characters Philip II and Egmont. A sly and dark theme, accompanied by Spanish guitar and castanets, symbolizes the tyrannical King Philip's obsession with power. It seems as if he has cast a spell on Egmont and others to force them to support his reign of terror. In contrast, Egmont's theme resonates in its pure, melancholy simplicity. Although Egmont is known as a successful warrior, his human vulnerability and inner conflict are shown here. This ambivalence is represented by the sounds of a horn solo and the arpeggios of the guitar. The themes of the two characters intertwine before they go their separate ways again, illustrating the complex relationship between Egmont and the king. Despite Egmont's admiration for Philip, he finds it increasingly difficult to agree with his Inquisition policies, leading to a growing tension. This tension culminates in a large tutti in which the characters' themes compete against each other in a Spanish dance.

3rd Movement: Beheading in Brussels
Egmont's naivety and blind faith in Philip ultimately cost him his life. Despite the warnings of his friend William of Orange, he is ambushed and captured along with the Duke of Horn. Egmont is condemned and executed in the great square in Brussels. The music reflects his final walk to the scaffold for execution. Egmont, a martyr betrayed by his friend Philip, marches towards his inevitable fate to the sounds of a pitiful death march. The people's cries of protest grow louder and the music becomes more somber until finally the drums announce Egmont's beheading. This execution leads to a public outcry and general dismay among the Dutch and European population and is seen as one of the reasons for the subsequent resistance of the Dutch against the Spanish occupiers.

4th movement: Revolt of the Dutch
The fourth movement begins with a warlike march led by the trombones playing a heroic and aggressive theme. The conflict continues until William of Orange manages to unite Protestants and Catholics and ultimately defeats the Spanish. After a virtuoso section, the entire orchestra begins a magnificent, triumphant chorale, alternating with cries from the brass. The work ends with short fragments of the Dutch and Belgian national anthems, symbolizing that the independent countries of Holland and Belgium emerged from this conflict.

Bert Appermont's composition impressively captures Egmont's dramatic story, combining historical events with musical expressiveness. The four movements of the work not only offer a journey through Egmont's life, but also a reflection on the political and social circumstances of the time that ultimately contributed to the emergence of modern European nations.
