Additional info/contents The term "alcazar" is of Arab origin and stands for "castle". It thus alludes to a period in the history of Spain, which is not at all clear to everbody, as the Moors invaded Spain in the 8th century in the wake of the expansion of Islam. Soon their culture became completely independent and reached its peak there, and was definitely the leading culture in Europe at htat time. Even to day the architectural top achievements of the Moors are stunning and rightly form part of the world's cultural heritage. The most famous treasures of that epoch are the Alhambra in Granada, the Great Mosque in Córdoba, and the Royal Alcázar (palace) in Sevilla. The playing of the Moorish archtects with water is unrivaled even today and also the incomparable mosaics still fascinate us. It was only in the 15th century that Granada, the last Moorish kingdom on Spanish soil was conquered during the so-called "reconquista", namely the conquest of the land and the defeat of the Moors by the Spaniards.
The overture Alcázar boasts Spanish atmosphere in an unmistakable way. This must not astonish at all, as the composer was essentially inspired to write this work during a visit to Seville, the capital of Andalusia on the Guadalquivir River. The romantic center section goes back to a walk in the garden of the alcazar in a starlit night. At noon, however, the composer visited the Santa Cruz district, in which the plot of the "Barber of Seville" is actually at home. In that part of town a young Spaniard thrilled him. He played guitar sitting under a lemon tree. The composer therefore captured the flamenco, the pounding rhythm of the heels on the floor and the sound of castanets in the overture's fast passages. The chords which he chose consequently are geared to the barré fingering for the guitar. Here then is a piece which is full of Andalusian life.

The Alcázar of Segovia, often referred to as the "Alcázar", is a fascinating fortress and palace that towers high above the Spanish city of Segovia. Its history spans several centuries and its imposing appearance reflects Spain's chequered history. The origins of the Alcázar of Segovia date back to Spain's Moorish period. It is assumed that a Moorish fortress stood on this site as early as the 8th century. During the Christian reconquest (Reconquista), the area of Segovia was brought back under Christian control in the 11th century and construction of the current Alcázar began in the 12th century.

Under the reign of King Alfonso VIII, the Alcázar was extended and embellished in the Gothic style. Over the centuries, the palace served the Spanish kings as a royal residence, court and prison. The Gothic elements are particularly evident in the impressive towers, high walls and ornate windows of the Alcázar. During the reign of Queen Isabel I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon, the Alcázar became an important political and cultural centre. Isabel is said to have accepted Ferdinand's marriage proposal here in 1469, which led to the unification of the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon. This move laid the foundations for the unification of Spain.

The Alcázar of Segovia impresses not only with its Gothic architecture, but also with later additions. In the 16th century under Charles V, a Renaissance wing was added to the palace, giving the complex an additional architectural dimension. The mixture of Gothic towers and Renaissance elements makes the Alcázar a unique architectural jewel.

In the 19th century, the Alcázar took on national significance and became a symbol of Spain's unity. After a devastating fire in 1862, which destroyed large parts of the palace, it was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style under the direction of architect Narciso Pascual y Colomer. The restored Alcázar became a national monument representing the history and unity of Spain. Today, the Alcázar of Segovia is one of the most visited sights in Spain. Its magnificent rooms, ornate gardens and breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside attract visitors from all over the world. The Alcázar remains not only a witness to Spanish history, but also a place where past and present merge in a fascinating way.
