Additional info/contents On September 19th, 1991, a mummified corpse of a man was found at the Similaun glacier in the Ötztaler Alps. The glacier unveiled an early man after 5300 years, with all his personal belongings. His clothes and weapons were fairly well preserved and today allow us a deeper insight into that period. Austrian nature filmmaker Kurt Mündel reconstructed the life of this man and made a film, which, based on facts, shows how it might have been then. Otto M. Schwarz used this documentary as an opportunity to write a work for symphonic wind band and musically resurrect the Man in the Ice.
A journey into prehistoric times, as surely musicians and audience have not yet experienced!

Konzertansage, Version 2:

Was macht Ötzi so besonders?

The composition "The Man in the Ice" by Austrian composer Otto M. Schwarz is more than just a musical performance. It is a sonic journey through the fascinating story of Ötzi, the man in the ice. The music brings the past to life and reflects the discovery of this amazingly well-preserved prehistoric man, who was found in the Ötztal Alps on 19 September 1991.

The composition by Otto M. Schwarz is an impressive homage to Ötzi and his story. Through the skilful use of orchestral instruments, Schwarz creates an atmosphere that captures the mystery and significance of this astonishing find. The music takes the listener on a journey through time, with the sounds capturing the mysterious aura of the glacial landscape and the timelessness of the prehistoric era.

On 19 September 1991, a German couple, Helmut and Erika Simon, came across the mummified body of a man during a holiday in the Ötztal Alps, which later turned out to be around 5300 years old. This sensational find became known as "Ötzi" and is one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. Ötzi was exposed by the retreat of a glacier, which led to his astonishing preservation. His well-preserved belongings, including weapons, clothing and tools, offer a unique insight into life in the Neolithic period. Ötzi is not only an archaeological sensation, but has also provided important information about the diet, clothing, tools and medical practices of his time.

Ötzi has not only fascinated the scientific community, but has also captured the imagination of the general public. His discovery has helped to deepen our understanding of prehistory and provide insights into the lifestyles and technologies of the Copper Age. Ötzi can be admired today in a purpose-built archaeological museum in Bolzano, Italy, where his mummified form and belongings are on display.

The composition "The Man in the Ice" by Otto M. Schwarz and the story of Ötzi merge into a powerful combination of music and archaeology. Both bring the past to life and allow us to transport ourselves to the fascinating world of the Neolithic Age. Music and history merge to create a cultural experience that honours the legacy of the "Iceman" in a unique way.
