By skilfully using the tonal possibilities of a wind orchestra and incorporating playful and humorous elements, Summerer succeeds in creating a work that is both technically demanding and entertaining. "Scherzo Concertante" by Reinhard Summerer

The word "scherzo" comes from Italian and literally means "joke" or "fun". In music, the term refers to a particular form and characteristic of a piece of music that is characterized by lightness, liveliness and often humorous or playful elements. Originally, the scherzo found its place in the Baroque period, but developed further especially in the Classical and Romantic periods and was popularized by composers such as Beethoven and Chopin.

A typical scherzo is written at a fast tempo and often uses a three-part ABA form scheme, with the middle section (the trio) having a contrasting character. It replaces in many cases the minuet in the classical symphony or sonata and brings a dynamic and often unpredictable quality to the composition.

The composition "Scherzo Concertante" by Reinhard Summerer

Reinhard Summerer, an Austrian composer, has created a modern interpretation and extension of the traditional scherzo form with his work "Scherzo Concertante" for wind orchestra. This work is not only an example of Summerer's compositional skills, but also of his ability to transfer the classic scherzo concept into the world of wind music, exploring new and exciting dimensions.

"Scherzo Concertante" begins mysteriously and enigmatically, not at all jokingly. The whole composition results in a completely new representation of a scherzo, away from the usual ideas. Even in the tutti part, heroic and powerful, the composition is its own representation of this compositional form. Perhaps this is precisely why the "Scherzo Concertante" has established itself as an often played piece in the repertoire of wind orchestras. The combination of technical challenge and musical appeal makes it a favorite with musicians and conductors alike.
