Additional info/contents Hillulah is an Israeli piece of music. It refrains from any “ethnic” or other musical stereotypes. It is, first and foremost, written for the young people of the Petakh-Tikva conservatory band, striving to provide an opportunity for the display of expression, technique, brilliance of sound and color of the various soloists, groups and ensembles within the band. The music consists of tonal and modal melodies, as well as several “bi-tonal” sections, together with some “Stravinskian” a-symmetric rhythmic ostinani.

"Hillulah" and the composition of the same name by Haim Permont

The term "Hillulah" (Hebrew: הִלּוּלָה) literally means "feast" or "celebration" and is often used in the Jewish context to describe the celebrations of the anniversary of the death of an important rabbi or saint. These holidays are marked by joy, dance and music as they honor the life and teachings of the deceased and celebrate his soul. Haim Permont, a contemporary Israeli composer, has taken up this tradition and put it into music in his composition "Hillulah" for wind orchestra.

The composition "Hillulah" is characterized by a mixture of tonal and modal melodies that reflect the rich musical tradition of Jewish heritage. The use of modal scales gives the music an oriental character and is reminiscent of traditional Jewish and Middle Eastern music. These melodies create a lively and celebratory atmosphere that captures the spirit of Hillulah celebrations.

A prominent feature of the composition is the bi-tonal sections, where two different keys sound simultaneously. This technique creates a complex and layered soundscape that reflects the complexity and tensions of life. The bi-tonal structure provides harmonic friction and interesting sonic effects that intensify the listening experience.

Inspired by Igor Stravinsky, Permont uses a-symmetrical rhythmic ostinati that give the music a pulsating and dynamic energy. These rhythmic patterns are irregular and often change time signatures, creating an unpredictable and exciting rhythmic structure. The ostinati add to the solemnity and dance-like nature of the composition, keeping the audience in constant anticipation and excitement.

"Hillulah" is not only a musical work, but also a cultural tribute to Jewish tradition and spirituality. By integrating traditional musical elements and modern compositional techniques, Haim Permont creates a bridge between the past and present that underscores the timeless relevance of Hillulah celebrations. The composition has been positively received by wind orchestras and music lovers worldwide. Musicians appreciate the technical challenges and musical depth of the work, while audiences enjoy the emotional and spiritual power of the music. "Hillulah" has established itself as a popular piece in concert programs, especially in performances that celebrate cultural heritage and musical diversity.

Haim Permont's "Hillulah" is a masterful composition that translates the essence of the Jewish celebration of the same name into music. By skillfully combining tonal and modal melodies, bi-tonal sections, and a-symmetrical rhythmic ostinati, Permont creates a work of great emotional and musical depth. "Hillulah" celebrates life, cultural heritage and spiritual connection and remains an important and inspiring work in the wind band repertoire.
