James Curnow's composition "A Day at the Fair" is a colorful musical journey that captures the vibrant sights and sounds of a fairground. With five movements, this piece takes us into a child's imagination and brings memories of fun days at the fair to life. With a total duration of around six minutes, the composition offers an entertaining and rousing experience.

The first movement, “Parade,” serves as a lively prelude to this musical fairground experience. The parade passes by, and the sounds of brass and drums represent the excited atmosphere of a festive procession. The musical performance captures the colorful floats, costumed participants, and general excitement that comes with a fairground parade.

The second movement, “Haunted House,” delves into the dark and mysterious world of a haunted house. The eerie sounds and mysterious harmonies take the audience on a spooky journey through the shadowy corridors of a haunted house. The musical elements reflect the spooky atmosphere as listeners immerse themselves in the exciting world of the unknown.

"Carousel", the third movement, brings a festive and happy atmosphere to the fair. The spinning melodies and upbeat rhythms reflect the joy and fun of the carousel. The different themes and timbres represent the colorful horses and other figures that twirl and dance happily.

The fourth movement, “Midway,” takes the audience on a stroll among the fair’s diverse attractions. Here listeners can hear the sounds of the various stalls, the shouts of the game sellers and the general excitement. The Midway's musical performance conveys a sense of movement and diversity as visitors stroll from one attraction to the next.

The final movement, "Rodeo", takes the audience into the world of cowboys and rodeo attractions. The powerful sounds represent the wild goings-on in the rodeo ring, while the musical motifs capture the energy and enthusiasm of the cowboys and cowgirls. From ring toss games to spectacular equestrian performances, the diverse elements of rodeo are showcased in this lively section.
