Composer Takahashi, Shin'ya
Difficulty level 5
Evaluation level of countries D5 (German highest level)
Duration 6:20
Additional info/contents The composer Shin'ya Takahashi (*1962) was inspired to write this work by the island of Bali, the so-called "Island of the Gods" and its music. He therefore uses elements of Balinese music in a modern tonal language. The music cultivated on Okinawa has astonishing similarities to that of Bali. This may be due to the fact that the inhabitants of the islands formerly known as Ryukyu maintained intensive trade relations with Indonesia. In Indonesia's national language, "Jalan Jalan" means "to walk" or also "to stroll". In his work, the composer musically wanders through the "Island of the Gods", which is reflected in four scenes that are heard in this order: "Morning Mood", "Market Hustle and Bustle in the Morning", "Early Afternoon" and "Men's Dance by Torchlight". Since its first performance in 2000 by the famous Hamamatsu Symphonic Wind Orchestra, the work has been one of the wind music "perennial favourites" in Japan.
