Difficulty level 4
Evaluation level of countries D3 (German medium level)
Duration 11:40
Additional info/contents The Bamberg Symphony Orchestra provided the occasion and inspiration for this composition. After an introduction with singing melodies in various instrumental groups, an Allegro ritmico in minor reverses the melodic development and then returns to major with simple time changes that give the music an extra cheerful character. A Bamberg Fantasy is just as suitable for competitions as it is for concert programmes.

Bamberg, a city of exceptional historical significance and cultural diversity, is picturesquely situated on the Regnitz river in northern Bavaria, Germany. The city has a fascinating history dating back to the early Middle Ages. Bamberg was founded in 902, when the East Frankish King Louis the German gave the area at the confluence of the Regnitz and Main rivers to a German nobleman named Eberhard. This nobleman built a castle on a hill, which served as the foundation stone for the creation of the city of Bamberg. In the 11th century, Bamberg reached a high point under the German Emperor Henry II. Henry II and his wife Cunegonde, who was later canonised, had a special connection to Bamberg. Bamberg Cathedral, an impressive cathedral, was built on the orders of Henry II and is considered one of the most important buildings of the German High Middle Ages.

The famous monument of the Bamberg Horseman, an equestrian statue from the 13th century, is one of the most important sculptures of the German Gothic period. During the Middle Ages, Bamberg developed into an important trading centre and was granted the rights of a free imperial city in 1307. Like many European cities, Bamberg was also affected by the witch hunt in the 17th century. Hundreds of people were accused and executed. The city also experienced various sieges and destruction during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648).

After the turmoil of the war, Bamberg experienced a period of prosperity in the 17th and 18th centuries, which was particularly characterised by the Baroque period. Many of the baroque buildings, including magnificent town houses, churches and palaces, still contribute to the architectural beauty of the city today. In 1993, Bamberg's old town was recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Over time, Bamberg has developed into a modern city that retains its historical identity. The city is home to a lively cultural scene, a renowned university and is known for its breweries, including the famous Rauchbier. Bamberg is therefore not only a window into the past, but also a vibrant city that wears its history with pride while looking to the future.
