Additional info/contents This concert march does not place high demands on the performers and is therefore suitable for many different orchestras. The instrumentation is designed in such a way that even smaller formations can play Orion without significant changes in the overall sound. The almost continuous rhythmic pulse in the percussion gives this majestic march a noble character.

A short recommendation of the composer for conductors: Unfortunately, certain performances are either too slow (so that it becomes "sluggish") or too fast (lacking the musical tension and the right character): I think that each conductor should decide for himself/herself what he/she likes best, without forgetting the basic idea of 'Slow March'.

Programme notes *: additional text

There is an exotic flavor to this composition. By no means is there any suggestion that this exotic flavor is authentic to the music of any particular far away land or culture. But from the very opening percussion ostinato that remains incessant throughout the majority of the march, there is a suggestion of, perhaps, a Middle Eastern desert caravan. (Picture camels laden with men wearing flowing white robes!)

The exotic flavor of the march is largely formed in the harmonic language. The principal theme is always presented in Aeolian mode (that is, the natural minor scale). This melody is also harmonized in parallel thirds. The modality and parallel harmonization of the melody creates a hypnotic feel.

The exotic flavor of the march is also achieved through a rich orchestration. Although Orion is certainly a grade 2 composition from a technical perspective, the instrumentation is packed. Van der Roost calls for the full family of clarinets (including E-flat soprano and alto), 3 trumpet parts, 3 French horn parts, 3 trombone parts, and a palette of percussion including glockenspiel, timpani, tom toms, and tambourine. The sensuous sonorities so critical to this composition are largely created with the band's "color" instruments, such as alto clarinet, bassoon, horn, euphonium, and string bass.

Van der Roost provides a refreshing conclusion to the march, which he describes in the score as optimistic and spontaneous. The prevalent exotic flavor of the march is quickly diverted to a rather playful, joyous (almost heroic) coda which brings the processional nature of the march to a rousing conclusion in the relative major key of E-flat.

"Several of my marches have a 'mythological' (god's) name: Helios, Mercury (Mercurius), Apollo, Minerva, Terpsichore, ... Orion fits into this series. Orion was not a commissioned composition: he saw the light because I was working on the Sinfonia Hungarica, when suddenly the somewhat 'sad' main theme emerged. It was musically too simple, too 'simple' for the symphony, so I put it aside until the Sinfonia Hungarica was finished. Later a few secondary themes were added, and then what it is now: a 'Slow March'. The 'duality' between minor and major makes Orion a bit 'tragic' and at the beginning very calm: after that the march becomes more open and optimistic. So I think Orion is a good title."

In Greek mythology, Orion was a giant huntsman whom Zeus (or perhaps Artemis) placed among the stars as the constellation of Orion.
