Additional info/contents The Gates of Troy tells the story of the 1184 B.C. Trojan War in Ancient Greek times. This historic conflict featuring the heroes Achilles, Odysseus, Hector and the beautiful Helena, lasted 10 years and was settled by the famous ruse of the Greeks, the ‘Trojan Horse’. This exciting work is all about the battle between Greece and Troy. It’s full of heroic sounding themes with beautiful melodic material but yet playable for any type of band due to its well thought out instrumentation.

The story of the Trojan War is an epic saga, rich in mythological figures, heroic deeds and tragic fates. In this tale, the events of the war are characterised not only by weapons and strategies, but also by the power of music, which serves as a catalyst for love, betrayal and triumph.

The Trojan War, according to Greek mythology, took place in the 12th century BC and was recorded in the ancient epics "Iliad" and "Odyssey". It was sparked by the abduction of Helen, the wife of the Spartan king Menelaus, by Paris, the prince of Troy. This act of abduction led to a ten-year war between the Greeks and the Trojans.

The Muses, goddesses of the arts, inspired musicians and poets on both the Greek and Trojan sides. Homer describes how the Muses inspired the epic poets on both sides to transform their deeds into lyrical masterpieces. The power of music and poetry is considered an essential part of the cultural heritage of the ancient world.

Achilles, the greatest warrior of the Greeks, was known not only for his valour but also for his musical talent. He mastered the lyre, a stringed instrument, and played it to calm tempers and strengthen camaraderie. His musical ability provided an interesting contrast to his war bravura and emphasised the complexity of the ancient heroes.

The most famous musical episode of the Trojan War was the story of the Trojan horse. The Greeks hid in a wooden horse, which they presented to the Trojans as a gift. The Trojans, impressed by the supposed gesture of peace, pulled the horse into their city. Hidden inside the horse, however, was a small group of Greek warriors. The ruse called "horse-cunning" led to the fall of Troy. After the fall of Troy, Helen, the beauty who had started the war, sang her lamentations in the form of melodies. Her songs expressed both her grief over the destruction of Troy and her own ambivalent role in this conflict.

The musical episodes of the Trojan War have been passed down through the centuries by poets, composers and artists. The story found its way into operas, symphonies and theatre plays, keeping the sonorous legend of the Trojan War alive in the world of art.
