Additional info/contents	Distant Voices [ferne Stimmen] ist ein sechszehnminütiges, viersätziges Blechbläserquintett, entstanden zwischen Frühling und Herbst 1990. Uraufgeführt wurde dieses Auftragswerk des American Brass Quintet am 5. Mai 1991 in der Abteikirche St. Maria der Delbarton School, anlässlich des 8. 'Hardly Any Sampson' Musikfestspiels. Die eigenartigen Titel der Sätze (1. James Agee: Schriftsteller; 2. Bobby Hackett, Jazz-Kornettist; 3. Pater Paul Diveny: Benediktiner; 4. Ben und Mark: meine Söhne) wurden aus einer langen Liste von Persönlichkeiten gewählt, die mein Leben besonders beeinflusst haben. Wir werden alle durch die permanente Filtrierung von unzähligen Einflüssen geprägt. Die 'fernen Stimmen' der Satztitel sind einfach die Stimmen, die unsere Gedanken und Handlungen lenken. Distant Voices ehrt diese Persönlichkeiten. James Agee, der 'A Death in the Family' [Ein Tod in der Familie] schrieb, hat mich mit seiner künstlerischen Ehrlichkeit ab meinen ersten Gymnasiumjahren markiert. Seine Stimme fordert mich permanent zur Ablehnung von Gewissheit und Bequemlichkeit. Bobby Hackett, ein Jazz-Kornettist mit lyrischer Eleganz, war einer der ersten Musiker, die ich mittels Schallplatten studierte. Ich hörte ihm zu und spielte zu seinen Improvisationen, die wesentlich weniger simpel sind als es scheint. Von ihm habe ich gelernt, einen Satz mit schöner Tonqualität zu spielen. Pater Paul Diveny, von der Benediktinerabtei St. Maria von Morristown im New Jersey, ist ein besonderer Freund. Er hat er mir geholfen, durch den Glauben eine Familientragödie zu überleben und sein Beispiel öffnete mir den Zugang zu den spirituellen Werten, die mein Gewissen tief erweitert haben. Meine Söhne Ben und Mark fordern mich dauernd heraus und bringen mich zum Staunen. Dank ihnen sehe ich das Leben wieder mit Kinderaugen; sie stimulieren meine schöpferische Lebensansicht. Der Satz, den ich ihnen widme, enthält die Energien, die sie auslösen wenn sie Verstecken spielen um sich gegenseitig Angst einzuflössen. David Sampson Distant Voices for brass quintet is a four movement, sixteen minute composition written during the spring and summer of 1990. Commissioned by the American Brass Quintet through a grant from the Jerome Foundation. The work was premiered on May 5, 1991 at Delbarton School/St. Mary's Abbey Church at the eighth annual 'Hardly Any Sampson' Music Festival. The curious titles of the movements (1. James Agee: Writer; 2. Bobby Hackett, Jazz Cornetist; 3. Brother Paul Diveny: Benedictine Monk; 4. Ben and Mark: My Sons) were chosen from a long list of people who have had a profound effect on my life. We are all the result of our continuous filtering of myriad influences. The 'distant voices' referred to in the title are simply the voices in one's mind that guide one's thoughts and actions. Distant Voices in meant to honor these people. James Agee, the writer of 'A Death in the Family', impressed me from my college days as truly absorbed in his life as a creative artist. His voice challenges me to not accept the obvious or comfortable. Bobby Hackett, an elegantly lyrical jazz cornetist, was one of the first musicians I studied through recordings. I used to listen to and play along with his deceptively simple improvisations. He taught me how to play a line and make a beautiful sound. Br. Paul Diveny, a Benedictine Monk at St. Mary's Abbey in Morristown, New Jersey, is a special friend who helped me survive family tragedy through religion. He introduced me through his example to the spiritual aspects of life in a way that profoundly deepened my awareness. My sons, Ben and Mark, are a constant challenge and surprise. They allow me to see life as a child again and feed my creative approach to living. This depiction captures the energy of them playing a 'hide and seek' game where the object was to scare each other. David Sampson Distant Voices [Voix lointaines] pour quintette de cuivres est une composition en 4 mouvements, d'une durée de seize minutes, écrite entre le printemps et l'été 1990. C'est une commande de l'American Brass Quintet payée par la Fondation Jerome. L'oeuvre a été créée le 5 mai 1991 à la Delbarton School/Abbatiale de St. Marie lors du huitième Festival de Musique 'Hardly Any Sampson'. Les titres particuliers des mouvements (1. James Agee: écrivain; 2. Bobby Hackett, cornettiste de jazz; 3. Frère Paul Diveny: moine bénédictin; 4. Ben et Mark: mes fils) ont été choisis à partir d'une longue liste de personnes qui ont particulièrement marqué ma vie. Sa voix me met constamment au défi de ne pas accepter l'évidence ou le confort. Bobby Hackett, un cornettiste de jazz au lyrisme élégant fut l'un des premiers musiciens que j'ai étudié par le disque. Je l'écoutais et jouais sur ses improvisations, bien moins simples qu'elles ne paraissent. Il m'a appris comment jouer une phrase et avec une belle sonorité. Le père Paul Diveny, Bénédictin à l'Abbatiale Sainte Marie de Morristown dans le New Jersey est un ami particulier qui m'a aidé à survivre à une tragédie familiale avec l'aide de la foi. Il m'a initié par son exemple aux aspects spirituels de la vie d'une manière qui a profondément élargi ma conscience. Mes fils Ben et Mark me mettent constamment au défi et ne cessent de m'étonner. Ils me permettent de revoir la vie avec les yeux d'un enfant et nourrissent mon approche créative de la vie. Ce mouvement qui leur est dédié capture les énergies qu'ils déploient en jouant à cache-cache pour se faire mutuellement des frayeurs. David Sampson Gewicht: 0.282
