Additional info/contents	Anfang 1986, anlässlich der Vorbereitung des 3. Internationalen Viola d'amore Kongresses, der im Juli an der Austin Universität in Texas, USA, stattfinden sollte, schlug ich meinem Freund Richard Lane vor, ein neues Werk für Viola d'amore zu diesem Anlass zu schreiben. Da er 1984 bereits eine erfolgreiche Sonate für Viola d'amore und Klavier geschrieben hatte, schlug ich ihm vor, ein Solo-Stück für Flöte, Viola d'amore und Streicher-Begleitung zu komponieren. Die Idee begeisterte ihn und so entstand diese wunderbare Serenade. Richard Lane's melodische Begabung und seine stubtile 'amerikanische' Harmonisierung kommen hier mit einer gewaltigen Einfachheit zur Geltung. Er nützt geschickt die Viola-Fingergriffe auf Doppelsaiten und mit den gedämpften Streichern erzielt er eine ganz besondere, weiche aber klare Gesamtklangfarbe. Die Uraufführung fand am 11. Juli 1986 mit dem Flötisten Stephen Robbins und dem Autor dieser Zeilen statt. Myron Rosenblum Sunnyside, New York August, 2006 In early 1986, with the approaching Third International Viola d'amore Congress, July 10-12, 1986 at The University of Texas at Austin, Texas, USA, I spoke to my friend Richard Lane to consider writing a new composition for the viola d'amore for that congress. Richard Lane had already written his Sonata for Viola d'amore and Piano in 1984, his first for viola d'amore, a successful work for the instrument. I suggested a work for flute, viola d'amore and strings. He liked that idea and so out came the wonderful, one-movement Serenade for soli flute and viola d'amore with string orchestra. Richard Lane's melodic gifts, his fresh harmonies and hard-to-describe 'American' sounds are evident in this charming work. He uses idiomatic double stops on the viola d'amore very successfully and with the strings playing 'con sordino,' the overall sounds are gentle and accessible ones. The first performance of this work was given July 11, 1986 with Stephen Robbins, flute and this writer on viola d'amore. Sa Sonate pour viole d'amour et piano écrite en 1984, avait été sa première oeuvre écrite avec succès pour cet instrument. Je lui proposai d'écrire une pièce pour flute et viole d'amour solos et cordes. L'idée le séduisit et c'est ainsi que fut créée cette superbe Sérénade. La talent de Richard Lane, magicien mélodiste au sens harmonique subtilement 'américain' s'exprime ici avec une puissante simplicité. A l'alto, il exploite habilement les doigtés sur doubles cordes et avec les cordes en sourdine, les sonorités globales sont douces et bien perceptibles. La création mondiale de cette oeuvre a été donnée le 11 juillet 1986 avec le flûtiste Stephen Robbins et l'auteur de ces lignes à la viole d'amour.
