O Heiland, reiß die Himmel auf fußt auf einer in kirchentonalem Dorisch stehenden Choralmelodie, die Brahms im Verlauf der fünf Einzelsätze kunstvoll zu variieren weiß. Die musikalische Fraktur steigert sich von einem eher homophon angelegten Satz im ersten Vers zu einem kunstvoll konzipierten doppelten Umkehrungskanon im Schlussteil.
