Additional info/contents Jan Moretus (1543-1610) was a book printer and publisher in his native city of Antwerp. He worked as assistant to his father-in-law, the renowned master printer and publisher Christoffel Plantijn. After Plantijn’s death in 1589 Moretus took over the business.

The composition Moretus consists of four parts that draw on the remarkable personality of Jan Moretus aswell as the printing business. In both the titles of the movements and the thematic structure we can see a certain symmetry: a playful allusion to the process of printing.
Part 1, A Celebrated Gentleman, describes the illustrious figure of Moretus in a festive chorale.
In the second part, Expressive Impressions, the printing press itself is brought to life in repeated motifs - despite the industrial, mechanical nature of the process, the product always has an artistic and cultural dimension.
In the third part, Impressive Expression, the wind band is invited (or challenged), to intone the slow theme with a poignant expressiveness.
Part 4, A Gentle Celebration, is a celebratory finale with a fresh theme.

Jan Moretus, also known as Joannes Moretus or Jean Moretus, was an important book printer of the 16th century. He lived in a time of upheaval and renewal and made a significant contribution to the dissemination of knowledge through book printing. Moretus was a pupil and later son-in-law of the famous printer Christophe Plantin and continued his work, making a significant contribution to the development of book printing in Europe.

Jan Moretus was born on 25 May 1543 in Antwerp, then part of the Holy Roman Empire. He grew up at a time when Antwerp was a centre of trade and culture, which certainly influenced his later career. Moretus began his training in the printing trade under Christophe Plantin, one of the leading printers of his time. Plantin's printing house, the Officina Plantiniana, was known for its high-quality prints and its role in the dissemination of humanist and scientific works.

Moretus' talent and commitment meant that he quickly became an important employee in Plantin's printing house. In 1570, he married Martine Plantin, Christophe Plantin's daughter, and thus became closely linked to the printing house through family ties. His work in the Officina Plantiniana was characterised by high quality and precision, which earned him an excellent reputation.

After the death of Christophe Plantin in 1589, Moretus took over the management of the print shop. Under his leadership, the Officina Plantiniana flourished and continued the tradition of publishing scientific, religious and literary works. Moretus was known for his collaboration with leading scholars and his ability to print complex texts in high quality.

Jan Moretus contributed significantly to the expansion and success of the Plantin printing house. He cultivated close relationships with scholars and scientists and ensured that the printing house continued to publish ground-breaking works. Among the most significant publications under his direction were theological writings, scientific treatises and classical literature. Moretus' work was crucial to the dissemination of humanist ideas and scientific knowledge throughout Europe. His print shop in Antwerp remained a centre of book printing and the dissemination of knowledge. Moretus' commitment to quality and innovation secured the Officina Plantiniana a place among the most important printing houses in Europe.

Jan Moretus was not only a successful businessman, but also a family man. He had several children with Martine Plantin, who later also joined the print shop and continued the family tradition. Moretus died in Antwerp on 22 September 1610, but left behind a significant legacy. Under the management of his descendants, the Officina Plantiniana remained one of the leading printing houses in Europe.

The printing works, known as the Plantin-Moretus Museum, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a testimony to the important role that Jan Moretus and his family played in the field of book printing and the dissemination of knowledge. Moretus' life and work are an impressive example of the combination of craftsmanship, entrepreneurship and intellectual commitment at a time of cultural and scientific awakening.

Jan Moretus was an outstanding printer whose influence extended far beyond his lifetime. Through his work in the Officina Plantiniana, he made a significant contribution to the dissemination of knowledge and culture in Europe. His ability to set high quality standards and cultivate important relationships with scholars and scientists made him a key figure in 16th century book printing. Moretus' legacy lives on in the Plantin-Moretus Museum and is a reminder of the central role he played in the history of book printing.
