Ode to R.S. is dedicated to Schumann's 200th birth year. Done in theme and variation form, the melody comes from an original hymn by 16th century French composer Loys Bourgeois. The clarinet section introduces Schumann's own harmonization of the Figurierter chorale as a beautiful, gentle choir in C major. Five unique variations follow, exploring and teasing with style, sonority and individual expressiveness. The bright conclusion employs a surprise contrapuntal entrance of Schumann's Traumerei superimposed over the full ensemble's emphatic restatement of the main chorale.

Robert Schumann was born on June 8, 1810 in Zwickau, in the Kingdom of Saxony. As one of the most important composers of the Romantic period, he left behind a rich legacy of musical masterpieces that continue to touch the hearts of music lovers around the world today.

Schumann showed an extraordinary talent for music at an early age and began taking piano and music lessons in his childhood. His love of music ultimately led him to study law in Leipzig, where he also intensified his musical studies and apprenticed with the respected piano teacher Friedrich Wieck.

As a composer, Schumann was a pioneer in the development of the Romantic musical style. His works are characterized by lyrical melody, expressiveness and profound emotionality. He wrote a variety of piano pieces, chamber music, orchestral works and operas that reflect his diverse talents as a composer.

In addition to his musical work, Schumann also worked as a critic and editor. He founded the renowned music magazine "Neue Zeitschrift für Musik", in which he advocated the promotion of young composers and the recognition of new musical trends.

However, Robert Schumann's life was also marked by personal challenges. His struggle with mental illness and his tragic confrontation with forbidden love for Clara Wieck, the daughter of his mentor Friedrich Wieck, were a source of personal turbulence that influenced his life and his work.

Despite these obstacles, Schumann left the world an impressive musical legacy that remains vibrant and inspiring 200 years later. His music speaks to the deepest emotions of the human soul and has touched generations of musicians and listeners alike.

On the occasion of his 200th birthday, it was time to honor and celebrate the life and work of Robert Schumann. His music remains a timeless testament to the power of human creativity and the infinite beauty of music. May his legacy live on and continue to inspire generations of music lovers.
