Programme notes *: The Maker’s Mark was commissioned by the Friends of the Band, Inc., in honor of Dr. Bruce Moss’s 30th anniversary as Music Director and Conductor of the Wheaton Municipal Band in Wheaton, Illinois. His 30th anniversary season also marked the 80th anniversary of the founding of the band and the 150th anniversary of the founding of the city of Wheaton. The Wheaton Municipal Band is a full symphonic concert band comprised of some of the finest musicians in the Chicago metropolitan area. Their summer concert series, performed for the community each year in Wheaton’s downtown Memorial Park, presents a wide variety of music ranging from traditional marches to musicals, classics, and challenging contemporary pieces. Each season the band features prominent soloists and guest conductors interspersed with outstanding soloists from within its membership. This mix of popular and classical music, thrilling soloists, and a professional-quality ensemble is designed to provide something enjoyable for everyone. In addition to having led the Wheaton Municipal Band to its widely recognized level of musical distinction, Dr. Moss is a respected conductor and teacher to many and was an important mentor to the composer at Bowling Green State University (OH), where he serves as Director of Bands. The excellence that is the hallmark of Dr. Moss’s work is honored not only in the spirit of the music itself, but in the title of the piece, which reflects the lasting imprint his artistry has left on the Wheaton Municipal Band, on Bowling Green State University, and on the composer.
