The "Story of the Arlésienne" refers to a literary figure who appears in various works of French literature and art. Originally from Provence, more precisely from the town of Arles, the "Arlésienne" has acquired a mythical and romanticised meaning over time. The "Arlésienne" is therefore a woman from Arles whose identity and history are often portrayed as mysterious and fascinating. She is often seen as a symbol of beauty, grace and mystery and has inspired numerous interpretations and depictions in literature, music and the visual arts.

The most famous depiction of the "Arlésienne" probably comes from the play of the same name by Alphonse Daudet, which was first performed in 1869. In Daudet's work, the Arlésienne plays a central, albeit invisible, role, as she never appears directly on stage. Instead, she is described through the eyes of other characters and thus remains mysterious and unattainable. The figure of Arlésienne has also been taken up and interpreted in other literary works and in the visual arts. She often embodies the longing for the unknown, the search for beauty and the pursuit of idealised love.

Georges Bizet, one of the most important composers of the 19th century, composed a suite entitled "L'Arlésienne", which serves as incidental music to Daudet's theatre play. Bizet's music helped to convey the romantic and tragic atmosphere of the Arlésienne and to reinforce its mythical significance in the art world.
