Programme notes *: This composition is based on the nursery rhyme "Three Blind Mice", the melody of which is used in a number of variations: in a canon, as an inversion, in a minor key, transformed, differently harmonised and orchestrated, and in different time signatures and tempos. The work consists of three continuous but contrasting movements: 1) Mouse March: the mice set off merrily, with the original melody presented as a march. - 2) Hymn: In a melodic hymn, wonderful songs of praise are sung to the life of the mice. - 3) Catch Me If You Can: In a lively chase, the farmer's wife tries to catch the mice. After a breathtaking acceleration, she cuts off the mice's tails, according to the lyrics of the song. This humorous work should make a nice contribution to expanding the repertoire for the lower divisions.
