The composition "Colonia Refecta" for wind orchestra, created by Leon Fliex, offers a fascinating musical journey through the Leidsche Rijn district in Vleuten, a historically and contemporary district of the Dutch municipality of Utrecht. The six parts of this composition offer a musical interpretation of both the historical heritage and modern character of this unique district.

The name "Colonia Refecta" itself suggests a history that extends from the past to the present. "Colonia" refers to the Roman colony that once existed in this region and left its mark. "Refecta" expresses the idea of renewal and resurrection that the Leidsche Rijn district has experienced.

The individual parts of the composition offer a complex musical representation of the history and character of Vleuten. From the ancient ruins and Roman relics to the district's modern architecture and vibrant culture, "Colonia Refecta" resonantly captures the essence of this place.

Leidsche Rijn, and especially Vleuten, is rich in history. Until 2001, Vleuten was the capital of the municipality of Vleuten-De Meern. Although it is now fully incorporated into the district of the city of Utrecht, Vleuten still retains features of its former independence. The picturesque streets, ancient buildings and vibrant community are testament to a rich past and a dynamic present.

Vleuten was once an important settlement in the Roman Empire, as evidenced by archaeological finds indicating a Roman presence in the region. Over the centuries, Vleuten has developed into a thriving suburb of Utrecht, known for its scenic beauty, historical attractions and vibrant culture.

Leon Fliex's composition "Colonia Refecta" pays homage to this rich history, offering listeners a sonic experience that captures Vleuten's past and present. Through its imaginative instrumentation, melodic motifs and emotional depth, "Colonia Refecta" invites listeners to embark on a musical journey through time and space and discover the beauty and diversity of this unique part of the city.
